I'm less concerned about Prince getting sued and more concerned with you being familiar enough with Barry Manilow songs to know that a Price song sounded like it. It's ok to know a wide range of music.

Which is why I never suggested he might not. Then again, he could have been sued for 'Purple Rain', deliberate or not. It's very unlikely to happen. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

"not a fan" yeah...ok | |

come on....some people may say: "there are only 7 notes, it happens". I believe in coincidences. I believe that a guy like Prince could write a progression that could be similar to what an unknown writer could have used.
But when the song is famous, there is no excuse. I didn´t hear ´Chelsea, but the chorus melody of ´Guitar´ is completely Beatles ´Back in the USSR´...note by note. Daft Punk´s ´Around the world´ is a very famous bassline. If ´Chelsea´ really sounds like this one, there is no excuse to do something so similar without giving credits...

Remember when Tom Petty was trying to sue the Red Hot Chili Peppers? Ridiculous. Petty didn't sue. More than a few people said the RHCP copied Petty. Petty himself said ""I seriously doubt that there is any negative intent there. And a lot of rock & roll songs sound alike." "What kind of fuck ending is that?"

langebleu said: vinx98 said: if thats the case, then Prince can legally use it. I remember the famous case when Ray Parker Jnr was sued for using the bassline of Huey Lewis and the News "I wanna new drug" on his smash hit "Ghostbusters". It was only the bassline! And he was sued! His career has never been the same since... Manilow co-wrote 'Could It Be Magic' and the chord structure is based on the Chopin Prelude. In fact, at the end of the track, the song breaks down just to the chords to reveal that it is Chopin. The similarity of the song with 'Planet Earth' has nothing to do with the chord structure - it is the bridge melody which is reminiscent of the Manilow song. Personally, I think it also sounds like one of those fancy contrived bridges Prince slots into some of his songs, and doubt whether any of the instances described above would be considered deliberate plagiarism.

Until we have the actual cd cover in hand to read the credits if necessary, it's all just speculation. If P used bits of others music I'm quite sure he'd credit the original artist. He's not cheesy. And what about other's who lifted, sampled or changed a chord or 2 of his. I'd much rather wait then jump on a MIGHT bandwagon. "Ronnie, talk to Russia." I stole that quote from somebody else. To be honest, without mimicry, however you fkn spell it, we'd still be figuring out how to hoover up termites and ants using bits of old bamboo.... who owns the intellectual property rights on that sharpened flint arrow head? somebody could've made a mint if they'd invented patents back then.
