The song "Positivity" - ur thoughts

yes

one of his strangest songs

When "LoveSexy" first came out, it was probably my least fav song on it. It took some years before I got my head round it.A song about Positivity, but which sounds like the opposite - all minor keys and creeped out lyrics

I've grown to love this tune - the best part for me is the campfire singalong, "in every man's life there will be a hang-up..."

what's ur interpretation of it all?

i've always loved this song and the ranty/manifesto-ish spirit of it. there's so much i love about that album, it's hard to put into words sometimes. the attention to detail in just about every song still amazes me to this day.

Imago

Sounds kind of thrown together. A bit lazy.
Ends the album, LoveSexy, on sort of a down note.

But for whatever reason, I like this song anyways.

First of all I love Lovesexy. A masterpiece,
Second Positivity is a great song and epic like in it's scope.
The lyrics are all about how we choose to live (+/-) and the actions we take in the face of adversity. I'm not much into lyrics as such but I do like these.
Yes the song is minor and somewhat eerie. That's kinda it's appeal as well.
BTW, did you know Mavis Staple recorded her own version?

Obviously it's not gonna be as cool but it' nice enough. I like the album becuase it's got a lot of the Lovesexy crew on it. And it's Mavis. cool

yeah...i liked her first paisley park album, though at the time i think i was a little non-plussed that only about half the album had prince's involvement, so that's what put me off buying 'the voice' when it was out. if it were just coming out now, i'd probably buy it just for mavis and not for the prince-association. in fact, i've been meaning to check out her new album...i've heard great things about it.

Is an interesting sonic experiment that goes well along with eye no, crystal ball and anna stesia... A unique sound from that era.

Unlike the bad parts of the Rainbow Children, it has good "message" lyrics without being offensive.

My bad. We have the same CD. Time waits for no one. That's the one with all the Lovesexy crew and her version of Train (Dream Factory cut). I have heard her version of Positivity but don't remember where. Hmmm.
Back on track,
Positivity is a bit scary for such a lyrically positive song but keep in mind, he's also talking about confronting Spooky Electric. wink

mavis' version of "positivity" is on her second paisley park album, "the voice".

and i gotta dig out my copy of "time waits for no one", cuz i didn't discover prince's version of "train" till WELL after i filed mavis' album into the mothball section of my collection, and that's one of my FAVORITE unreleased prince tracks. nod

This would be a great topic for a new thread. Get people off the Planet Earth frenzy for a bit.
Songs with lyrical/Musical contrasts.

Love the whole album, and this song is the perfect finale!

There is a killer, very very modern sounding beat and bells that comes into the last minute or two of the song, I'm still waiting for someone to sample that, Missy Elliott?

The beat is cold and funky. And the choruses remind me of the Brides of Funkenstein. Good track. smile

L wink ve Positivity, it is one of my fave P tracks, love the diversity and build up within it , and just love the spooky-ish part where he goes ''In every man's life there will b a hangup, and so on''

""hold on 2 yr soul, we got a long way 2 go....."""

"In every man's life there will be a hang-up
A whirlwind designed 2 slow U down
It cuts like a knife and tries 2 get in U
This Spooky Electric sound
Give up if U want 2 and all is lost
Spooky Electric will be your boss"

Call People Magazine, Rolling Stone
Call your next of kin, cuz your ass is gone
He got a 57 mag with the price tag still on the side - uh!
Cuzzin' when Spooky say dead, U better say died
Or U can fly high right by Spooky and all that he crawls 4
Spooky and all that he crawls 4
Don't kiss the beast
(Love & honesty, peace & harmony)
Positivity
Love & honesty, peace & harmony
Say hold on 2 your soul, U got a long way 2 go
Sho' nuff {x3}

Don't kiss the beast
Be superior at least

much as i like Planet Earth, it's lyrics and magic like this
and the way it's delivered on Lovesexy that i still miss.

his lyrics have become so bland lately. fcuz there are still
great lyrics like on some of TRC and ONA etc. but Musicology
3121 and Planet Earth seriously lack in thought provoking or
inspiring lyrics.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I love it, and have from the first listen. The quirky percussion sound took me a while to get used to, but, like many of Prince's songs, the simplistic structure revealed more layers of sound every time I listened.

The lyrics are great.
