Sony BMG Pulls Out Of New Prince Album http://www.gigwise.com/ne...ntid=33952
Sony BMG Pulls Out Of New Prince Album After he gives it away for free.... Song BMG have announced they will no longer be releasing Prince’s new album after his decision to give away thousands of copies for free. The singer-songwriter has agreed to give away copies of ‘Planet Earth’ with the Mail On Sunday, with ticket holders for one of his upcoming 21 gigs at London’s O2 Arena also receiving a CD. A spokesperson for Sony BMG now says, Given the sheer number of copies we are talking about here it seemed the right thing to do for retailers to become exempt from the deal in the UK." ----- I was going to post this right after this information went public (01/07/2007). I signed up to post it here and was hit with the 'You are new, you cannot post yet, shut it for 5 days or so' policy inacted here to keep Prince haters from defacing the site. Totally understandable policy. I was expecting someone else to post this info on this site before i could post. Seems no one has or it was posted without it being an obvious subject title to the thread. Nevertheless welcome to week old news or please point me to where this was already posted on this site and i will lock or close this thread if i have such ability as a member.

As far as i understood it was 'only' Sony BMG in the UK who are doing this.
Do you mean they put their hands off it worldwide now?

So not releasing at all is looking after the shareholders best interest. Is this on about distribution? I got the impression this is only about distribution, if so, then that means smaller distributors have an opportunity here?

well, shareholders only care about profit...so, releasing a product for free...to an entire country...well, that's not really a smart business decision. with that being said...an artist's prerogative is totally different then a businesses..but lets not kid ourselves, if prince wanted to be heard he should have struck this deal without universal uks involvement prior. but he didn't...and it's just further proof of what how unbusiness savy he is. Space for sale...

no shit, they are a business... if prince wanted to follow the indie model he should have followed the model set by ani difranco or aimee mann... but that's not what he is after now is it? how interesting that two woman have revolutionized the music industry and yet prince ignores their efforts and his fans still think there is a war to be fought. Space for sale...

but that's not what he is after now is it? What would he have done differently, following their model? (a sincere question because I really don't know--I mean I know ani's got her own label and all but I'm just curious about more of the details. . .)

Yeah, but it's only for one day, in one country(?){Sorry my geography is horrid}. Can the paper really distribute so many copies at press time, as to really cripple the sales so much that it wouldn't be worth it to release at all? I mean is the paper adding on extra man power to handle the sudden demand oor will they print the same number as copies as they do any other Sunday, maybe a few thousand more, and when they're gone, they're gone. How much do the share holders stand to lose over a few thousand copies?

So getting your album out to all your UK fans for free /the price of a newspaper plus another 2 million potential fans and getting paid $1million for it is bad business sense nowadays is it. Did you think back in the late 90s when he was making maximum profit from his relatively smaller album sales that was bad business too . Prince aint no business half-wit , hes succeeding doing things his own way , making lots of money from it too , good on him Check out Chocadelica , updated with Lotusflow3r and MPLSound album lyrics April 2nd 2009 :

An assessment that applies to at least 80% of Prince's actions throughout his career, and in the past decade in particular.
