My review:
But first some comments: I thought "Musicology" was the worst Prince album ever. I thought TRC is amoung his best efforts. And I loved 3121; classic Prince with some alltime favorites of mine like The Word, Love, Lolita... I've heard Planet Earth fully now. Here's what I think: Planet Earth: Kind of a dull & melancholy way to open an album...I'll be forwarding past this one often. Guitar: Okay. I hate the riff; sounds like U2's "I Will Follow". I think the song would have benefited from crazed guitar solos after every verse instead of the riff. Somewhere Here on Earth: Absolutely exquisite Prince song. Best ballad in years. Instant Classic and best track on the album. The 1 U Wanna C: Catchy, poppy, candy...forgettable. Future Baby Mama: Fine, sounds good...in the long tradition of "Do Me Baby"...But Jesus can't he stop making this same song over and over again??? Mr. Goodnight: Groovy, whatever. All The Midnights In the World: Another forgettable pretty sounding ditty. Chelsea Rodgers: Now THAT is funky. I never get tired of new Prince funk workouts. Lion of Judah: zzzzz No recognizable melody. Resolution: I like this one quite a bit; a loose jangly guitar pop tune with nice Wendy background vocal and nice hook in the lyric. Nice synth wash finish. Overall: Prince by the numbers. C+ I really wish the guy would stretch himself because he's done this album over and over and over. It's all good music, but I'm surprised he's not bored with himself.

okay. I know most fans havn't liked his last 2 albums [musicology & 3121], but I did. But I have alot of faith in Planet Earth it looks like so far this album has recieved alot of good responses. This could be the start of Prince music like we havnt heard in years. While the last 2 albums were good in my opinion they weren't his best and to me, so far, this could be some of his best work in years. I am really looking forward to buying the album when it is released. peace & love. love God.

I really don't understand the complaints about Mr. Goodnight..this is a GREAT song, catchy chorus, smooth beat tempo, nice breezy motha, my choice for a 2nd single on the pop radio stations that or C.R. I would go so far as to say that it's one of the best on the album. Planet Earth has a Purple Rain, Gold vibe..a classic. I think enough has been said about Chelsea Rodgers, it is incredible, can't wait to here it live. Lion of Judah if you don't get it you don't but I do and I appreciate the strength it's message conveys. There is something for all types of Prince fans on this album, the copy I heard was of such bad quality I can't wait for the album to drop. 1 over Jordan...the greatest since

Planet Earth: really like the opening with the piano, the drumtrack and later the guitar. The verses are cool and stripped down. The chorus is a bit busy for my taste, as if there’s just too much going on all of a sudden. The bridge still reminds me of Could it be Magic and doesn’t do much for me. After the bridge the verse and the building tension do sound nice. Reminds me of Last December mixed with 3 Chains of Gold. (7.5) Guitar: as far as pop rock tunes go I like this a lot. It’s breezy and light and the guitar gives it a bit of an extra edge. Still a lightweight tune in Prince’s catalogue. Nothing too dramatic or deep, just fun fluff. Not a guilty pleasure by any means but not a classic either. Wish he would have kept that guitar solo at the end going on longer and louder, like say let’s go crazy. (7) Somewhere Here On Earth: Cool instrumentation! Love the piano and horns, although I’m not too sure about the drums, could have sounded a bit more real perhaps. Anywho, vocal track is absolutely top notch highest caliber prince delivery. Reminds me of the “One Nite Alone cd more than it reminds me of Power Fantastic but I can see how people would think of that one because of the horns and the piano et all. The only thing I don’t like about this song is that he has this classic sounding timeless song and he has to mention a pager.(8) The One U Wanna C: Very catchy. It’s stuck in my head all the time though I don’t really like it, lol. I think this will be a grower. Something I won’t play very often but will always like when it comes up on shuffle. Cool effort, nice arrangement with lost going on without it being too cluttered or over produced. It sounds breezy and open. (7) Future Baby Mama: Still not sure about the title but once again a nice vocal delivery and an all out vintage prince instrumental backing. Love the use of the linn on this one. It’s like an updated version of What Do U Want Me 2 Do more than anything else. And that’s a good thing imo cuz that is one of only 4 songs I can stand on Musicology. (7) Mr Goodnight: Love how he mentions a handful of songs or lines out of his catalogue in this tune. It flows well and contrary to what others have said I think it fits pretty well on this cd, especially coming right after Future Baby Mama which kind of leads into this track softly, in that it breaks with the more pop rock organic feel of the preceding tracks. Love the fact that it’s ‘rap’ yet the backing tracks sound more organic than he usually utilizes for these type of songs. Perhaps it’s a guilty pleasure but I just love Prince’s deep talking/rapping vocal. Not a classic lol but nice enough (6.5) All The Midnights In The World: After all the negative talk from the initial reviews I expected this to be horrible. Well, in fact I think it’s very very nice indeed. Sure it’s sweet but there’s a redeeming quality in it. The vocal harmonies are subtle and nice and the melody is different and quirky enough to save it from being syrupy. I’m a sucker for short, mid to fast tempo prince songs that last under 3 minutes and this is a great addition to those we already have. (7.5) Chelsea Rogers: Judging from people’s reviews I’m probably the only one who thinks this tracks would have been better off relegated to a b-side or an obscure online release. It’s not that the track is weak, it’s actually nice and bouncy. Love the way it flows effortlessly and the bass is so incredibly delicious. My gripe with this song is that it’s Shelby on vocals. I don’t like that. One of the most upbeat and bouncy tracks on the album and Prince himself is way down in the mix except some short shout outs. Although it’s a track with great potential this is without a doubt the one I will play least of all. Having said that, I think I will bust it out once in a while if only for that delicious breakdown at the end and the horns on it. (6.5) Lion of Judah: love the opening, the kick drum and the purple rain like guitar and the opening line is just sooo beatles “sitting on the floor of an all white room, feeling like the color blue”. Absolutely love it. It flows effortlessly, like many of the tracks on this album. Feels like it was recorded quickly and not messed with too much. Not overproduced or muddled. Clear and spontaneous sounding. (8) Resolution: another one of those songs that benefit from not being over produced and laced with a million different keyboards and cowbells. Most revolution sounding track imo even if it might not sound like something off Parade. The lyrics are amongst pearls before the swine and dear mr man subjects but come off less contrived than dear Mr Man imo. Which is what reminds me most of the Revolution/Wendy and Lisa stuff in the early days. The only time it leans toward cringe territory is when he says “come on now all over the world”, that is just too cliché for my taste. Beyond that it’s probably my fav track off the album (8.5) the main thing i like about this album is that unlike some previous albums, like Musicology, there is nothing on this that makes me cringe or think the album contains real filler. the production -as far as i can make out in this lousy quality- is perfect. it sounds fresh, light and breezy from start to finish with only the title track being an exception in all it's muddled 3 chains of gold glory. another nice thing about this album is that it sounds like an album again, diverse and with an erratic flow but still kind of glued. there's different styles but it doesn't feel like a mixtape which was what imo both musicology and 3121 suffered from somewhat. fcuz you can never know how long prince sat on these tracks but they sound as if they were recorded all together in a short space of time, without a million overdubs and mixes being made. the melodies speak for themselves, and eventhough most of them are not total classics, they don't reak of an insane kind of pretention or wanna be status. they just are and sound very healthy and uncontrived. i can't wait to go to the store and get my excellent quality copy of this, and listen to it over and over again. i'm not completely nuts about this but that's fine, from what i hear on it it sounds like it's an album that doesn't hit you like a ton of bricks but will remain a favorit for a very long time to come none the less. now all i've left to desire is a shitload of b-sides and outtakes from the 2005-2007 sessions popping up on 3121.com You like it! You really like it! uncanny isn't it i bet you really hate it now or do we actually agree again on an album? and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Snap said: "Resolution" -- I was just listening to this and paying attention to Prince's vocals... For those who've been following Wendy & Lisa these past 20 years, do you not think they at least came up with the melody line? I daresay they may have been the first to sing this song and/or at least coached Prince how to sing it. Sounds like Prince singing in their style.
Yup, there are several things about T1UWC, Lion Of Judah and Resolution that made me think of W&L's work on GirlBros and Eroica.

Prince - Planet Earth (Listened to two-and-a-half times at a launch party in the Indigo bar of the 02 centre last night.) Supposedly, this album was recorded at Paisley Park this year. However, that doesn't tell you when it was written. The way I look at it is that Prince has hundreds, even thousands of songs in the vaults waiting to go, and as a result, at this stage in his career one Prince album is probably gonna be pretty much the same as another (assuming he just picks ten songs from his big secret song collection). It will be above a certain standard, because it's Prince for God's sake, but it won't be the best he's capable of either. (The man needs an editor, but who's gonna tell him?) Planet Earth is very good. If he says "Here's a song from the new album" at the gigs in August, your heart won't sink the way it does with a lot of artists. It sounds like a Prince record. Beyond that, there's not a lot you can read into it. The sleeve features Prince looming over the planet with his hands held above it, like an interventionist god. Anyway, here's a track-by-track... 1. "Planet Earth" An eco-warning. Quite slow-paced, it's Lennon's "Imagine" meets "Sign O'The Times", with a melody which lifts from "Harvest For The World" and "Could It Be Magic" (you'll know what I mean when you hear it). Better than I'm making it sound. 2. "Guitar" You've probably heard this by now: the single (although how it functions as a 'single' in the traditional sense when everyone is gonna get the album free with the Mail On Sunday is a bit of a mystery). The melody of his own "Girls And Boys" laid over the guitar line from U2's "I Will Follow". Very catchy, with the easily-memorable "I love you baby... but not like I love my guitar" chorus, but a bit lumpen compared to the bright, airy demo version. 3. "Somewhere Here On Earth" A ballad reminiscent of Smokey's "Ooh Baby Baby" and Whitney's "Saving All My Love For You", with a deep-voiced talky bit. 4. "The One U Wanna C" An uptempo, radio-friendly one with some smart, playful lyrics ("I've got a lot of money/I don't wanna spend it on me...", "I know you ain't a concubine..."). You can imagine Shania Twain singing it. If that doesn't put you off. 5. "Future Baby Mama" Another slow one, with a cascading falsetto melody a la "Eye Hate U". Is he going slow-fast slow-fast alternately? This album is definitely heavily front-loaded with slowies, which interrupts the momentum somewhat. One lyric stands out: "Paris, London, Africa, San Lucas, Mexico, I know what you want... (...) ...You want your girlfriends to hate you." 6. "Mr Goodnight" Pace-wise, imagine Al Jarreau's "Morning". Evokes a world of luxury, with references to private jets, and swimming pools with their own waterfalls. And a bit of self-referencing: "All the world calls me Prince... but you can call me Mr Goodnight". 7. "All The Midnights In The World" Somehow, even when you see the title of this one, you know it's gonna be genius. It's a beautifully simple pop tune in the tradition of "Starfish And Coffee", with a touch of "Manic Monday" about the arrangement. Namechecks obscure 90s US indie band Zuzu's Petals, somewhat bafflingly. Surprisingly short. 8. "Chelsea Rodgers" Pumpingly funky, impossible not to nod your head to. Seems to be about his mama, or his mama's mama. In any case, the subject has "still got a butt like a leather seat". The chant "Come on, Chelsea, come on!" will make this one unpopular with most of the UK. 9. "Lion Of Judah" There had to be a religious one, didn't there? Ah well, at least he's had the decency to hold it back till track 9. And it sounds a bit like "Money Don't Matter 2 Nite". Could be a lot worse, then. 10. "Resolution" Not the ponderous finale the title (and position) suggests. Breezy, choppy guitar which reminds me of The Style Council's "My Ever Changing Moods" (or, to go back to the source, Curtis Mayfield). Hippy-mystic lyrics such as "Love is like a circle, no beginning and no end". Other important Prince info, announced by the guy from promoters AEG: EXTRA TICKETS Because the size and shape of the venue was unknown when the tour was announced, the number of tickets sold was conservative, and now there are some new ones to be released, from Sunday at 10am. CLUB 3121 TICKETS Prince will be playing a 'Club 3121' show (i.e. his late night, aftershow jam sessions) in the Indigo part of the 02 centre every single night of the 21-date residency. Tickets for these go on sale on Friday (i.e. tomorrow), with priority going to existing holders of gig tickets.

Chelsea Rodgers is probably more religious. . [Edited 7/12/07 1:30am]

I've listened the album three times. I really like it, but I'm not impressed; I mean, I love that organic production (which both Musicology and 3121 lacked), and I'm happy to see that Prince has returned to a guitar-hero status (his best "guitar" album since TGE), but most of the songs still don't say anything to me, which is odd since I ABSOLUTELY LOVE almost all of the 3121's songs at the first listen.
My favourite tracks: Planet earth, SHoE, The 1U Wanna C, Chelsea Rodgers, Resolution.

There's a guitar solo in The Beautiful Ones? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I am very sad that I won't be able to hear it this sunday when it is released free with a newspaper in the UK. The reason for this is that there is no way I can support the particular paper Prince has chosen to do the promotion.
For the first time in my life I find a Prince action hard to defend. Sorry Prince but the Mail on Sunday? seriously? I have real problems with the fact that this right wing, ie, racist, sexist and willfully ignorant newspaper is going to experience a huge spike in sales and my favourite artist will be responsible for it. I have thought about it and perhaps he feels that all papers are basically full of lies because they fail to take in the bigger picture which in Princes mind is probably about God. Religion is ok with me but not when people start feeling that thier beliefs mean they no longer have to be politically conscious. I hope that this is not the case, just a mistake and Prince didn't check properly about the paper before he agreed to what his reps had negotiated. I feel perhaps I might be missing something here, why did he do it? If anyone knows please help me out! "so glam, it's absurd"

I don't like the Mail either, but I do actually buy it occasionally, if for no other reason than to re-affirm my belief that it's horrible, and at least this week you get the new Prince CD for less than one quid fifty. Question.
So is Planet Earth Prince's guitar based/quirky pop/folkish album with a few slow jams and a dance track? To put it in simplistic terms. Also when I say guitar based I don't mean hard rock guitar just electric guitar in general. I've heard quite a bit but I've held back overall waiting for better quality. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.
