hmm I dunno but yeah, that's weird. I certainly didn't mind that he was giving me a hard time...it was all in good fun as far as I was concerned...

(Even I will admit it's laughable that I think Mr. Goodnight is one the best tracks on the album.)

Anything Camille-esque? (The 'Camille' aspect of 3121's title track is why I consider it the best Prince song from the last 10 years!!!!)

Thanks again for the review.

No, nothing remotely Camille-esque. sad

So I like the first three songs PE, Guitar and Somewhere Here On Earth... (they are all VERY good) and the next few songs feel like the filler that every album seems to have these days... as soon as the singles are over, there is a lot of mediocre, but not totally bad.

Chelsea is not the superfunk masterpiece that some people will say. It's not bad, but Everyday is a Winding Road (Prince Version) isn't terrible either... but it IS forced funk. But Prince's forced funk is better than a lot of the so called "pure funk" these days and I do enjoy the song all the same.

Lion Of Judah is BY FAR the most stand out track for me, and it has nothing to do with the song being "good" or "bad". It is the Wendy and Lisa factor. Keep in mind that I am only 23 and the first album I really enjoyed was The Gold Experience. I was barely alive when Purple Rain came out...

But at the end of the day, even though Lion Of Judah is not my favorite Prince song, OR my favorite from Planet Earth, the sound that he has with W&L (or maybe just Wendy, I don't think we are sure on that yet)... it seems... "right".
Not every song will be a winner, and I am not one for "Prince and the Revolution" nostalgia... Even though Lion of Judah is a "miss" in my opinion, the sound is right. He should work with Wendy (and Lisa) as much as he can. I don't even like Lion of Judah, I just recognize that it is representative of the sound that they could create.

Even when they were doing the hits in London at that show last year, Wendy and Lisa add something to the mix that is paramount to the experience. It is true that it IS 1980's nostalgia for some, but for me nostalgia isn't possible because I was one year old. Truely, Prince has that spark with Wendy and (maybe) Lisa... not every song will be a winner... Lion of Judah is not a classic, but it gels. I hope Prince recognizes that.

Even when it comes to Purple Rain, I have heard hundreds of live versions, but the one that got me was the Brit Awards last year. It doesn't matter that Prince probably wrote the entire song on his own- sometimes it is the overall sound... A million people could have played the opening chords to Purple Rain, but it wasn't "nostalgia" that made it feel more powerful when Wendy was playing it. It wasn't nostalgia that made Reflection on Tavis Smiley feel more powerful. Prince + Wendy = Syngergy. I hope he never breaks ties with her again. He is an amazing talent, and so is W+L, and they enhance each other's output. Regardless of affinity for a particular song, their effect on each is easily heard, and they are all better for it.

.....

To be honest, though, Prince could have done better. But, he could have done better with Musicology and 3121 also.

Prince's problem is one we should all accept as fans. The majority of Prince's "brilliant" work stems from writing songs about conflict: God or Sex, Obedience or Being True To One's Self, etc. Now, Prince has clearly decided what he believes, and that realization gave us the last great masterpiece, The Rainbow Children. After that, what more can Prince really say? He has said what he believes, and there are only so many metaphores that will describe those beliefs.

Sure, there may be a political song here and there, or a free-spirited pop song here and there, but in general songwriters write about the things that are most prevalent in their lives. People get mad at Prince for writing religious songs... they think those songs aren't edgy enough, or don't have enough mass appeal. But as a songwriter, you write what you know and Prince is at the place he is at...

No, it isn't his best work, or even close. His best work came from conflict... Every artist of note is noted because of those same conflicts. Prince was noted for it, but now he is past it.

Just like a Paul Mccartney song vs a song Paul Mccartney written during The Beatles, the earlier stuff is generally better. Prince will most likely never come close to the briliance of Purple Rain (but it is possible... The Gold Experience was another masterpiece primarily due to the conflict he was experiencing at the time), but I don't wish another masterpiece on him. It takes adversity to create something so meaningful and Prince has created those albums many times over. Instead, I would rather Prince continue to be at peace and create music that reflects that, even if it isn't as satisfying when new album comes out. At least we know the concert will never let us down and our man is happy too...

Just like a war, music that results from conflict speaks more to all of us that the music born of peace time. No one watches the news when everything is tame, and Prince's "tame" music elicits a similar response. But life is a journey... so even the song with most "sweetener" still has something to say... We should all be glad to find that sweetened place one day.

But seriously... the one thing is... that place is sweeter with Wendy around. Those two must be kindred spirits.

Wow. I really don't like Lion of Judah.....

And I keep listening to it. Other songs on this album are better, but Prince clearly has something with Wendy and Lisa. I can't stress this enough...

On my third listen of PE... I think Somewhere Here on Earth is the best song, but the stuff with Wendy and Lisa sounds the most "right"... and like I said I'm not one for 1980's nostalgia. It's the vibe itself. Now he just need to pick the "right" songs to work with them on (or all future songs to save himself the decision making trouble smile )

Snap

i couldn't wait, i opened it early...

First Impressions

"Planet Earth" confused
"Last December" meets "One Song" in music & lyrics
interesting message -- i'll need some time with this
nice guitar work at the very end

"Guitar" smile
hey, whaddya know, it features guitar this time around!
maybe it's me, but the drums and bass seem to drag it down
nothing new lyrically for prince -- music 1st and above all, eh?

"Somewhere Here On Earth" cloud9
very nice all around -- parade-like piano with miles davis style trumpet
but prince does know he ain't that easy to get a hold of, don't he?

"The One U Wanna C" biggrin
new wave country-rock
it's different, for prince
fun

"Future Baby Mama" music
if prince wrote an '80s song knowing what he knows now
i love this -- a stand-out song on this album
("do me, baby" meets "eye hate u" with an '87-'88 vibe)

"Mr. Goodnight" rolleyes
[i ain't even gonna say a thing about this one]

"All The Midnights In The World" bored
i'm not much of a fan of this vocal style ("circle of amour")
bass, drums, piano do nothing but count time
this song makes me sleepy

"Chelsea Rodgers" dancing jig
larry graham walking bass styled dance number
i won't turn some of you off by making song comparisons here
i like it

"Lion of Judah" neutral
there's that vocal style again, immediate turn-off
sounds like "cinnamon girl" meets "a million days"
interesting lyrics -- i'll comment on these later

"Resolution" smile
pretty good message song

in conclusion...
i'm disappointed
i was expecting a much more exciting album
this one lands between musicology (fair) and 3121 (great) to me
it's good, but not much more than that
tho i'm looking forward to using the key to unlock what more planet earth has to offer

My Top 10
01. Future Baby Mama
02. Somewhere Here on Earth
03. The One U Wanna C
04. Chelsea Rodgers
05. Resolution
06. Guitar
07. Planet Earth
08. Lion of Judah
09. All the Midnights in the World
10. Mr. Goodnight

Planet Earth is epic...
Guitar is fun...
Somewhere Here On Earth is the sweeping masterpiece ballad...

After that it is down hill.. But Future Baby Mama Should work for R&B radio, but I'd rather see Planet Earth and SHOE released... I don't like it when he tries to release things FOR radio... it's pandering...

I think I hear some W&L vocals on Planet Earth... I hope so. Lion of Judah and Resolution remind us of why those three work well together but dissapoint. Planet Earth is a collaboration that sounds like those three AND is the genius we all hope for when they get together.

SHOE is damn good too... This album sounds like a half Revolution/half solo Prince album... The Revloution sounds like they belong together, but some of the better songs happen to be the ones Prince did by himself in this case...

I don't know... I keep listening to this, and I feel very satisfied by sound and colaborations, but not with the final result. But it is better than Musicology and 3121 if only that it is a step towards new greatness... Prince just has to stick with the vibe and his fellow musicians he'll get there.

The album is great, definitely a fantastic release by Prince. I think a lot of us (myself included) just expect so much out of Prince's albums that our expectations are somewhat unrealistic and we are a little disappointed at first.

When I first heard the "3121" album I was disappointed and now I love that album (except for a few songs). When I first heard "Planet Earth" I was a little underwhelmed but after a few more listens I really love this album, it's fantastic. The only song that I seriously dislike is "Mr. Goodnight." It's not so much Prince's rapping, I have no problem with that. It's the cheesy background vocals and music that I don't like. But all the other songs on the album are great and the ones that I wasn't so hot about on first listen have really grown on me.

"Lion of Judah" is my current fave, I love it. "Planet Earth" my second fave. And "All the Midnights of the World" and "Resolution" have totally grown on me...(on my first listen I wasn't that crazy about those two). And once "Chelsea Rodgers" gets in your head you can't get it out. "Somewhere Here On Earth" is a classic Prince ballad, "Future Baby Mama" is really great, reminds me of "Do Me Baby." "Guitar" and "The One U Wanna C" are both great as well..."Guitar" especially is great. I know a lot of the org thinks "Guitar" is just okay but it really grows on you and I can only imagine how incredible a live version must be.

So yeah, the album is fantastic, I give it 8 out of 10 rating. Very solid effort from Prince. And I just wanna say to everyone to please give the album a few listens and wait a day or two (which is what I did) before you jump the gun and start saying that you are disappointed with the album, blah, blah, blah.

Damn, you're one tough critic! Do you like *anything?* or do you just underrate stuff to show your "superiority"? Damn, you even don't like Starfish & Coffee, but you give Mr. Goodnight an 8/10. I'd be guessing you're a hip hop fan. That explains it. <3

Don't get it twisted...I don't think I'm superiour at all, honest! I know I don't know much about music...but I do know what I like. But yes, I'm a pretty tough critic, too.

So in my defense:
-I rarely give anything 10/10 because 10/10 is perfect, and nothing is completely perfect. shrug
-Segues always get 1/10. (So even Wedding Feast gets a 2/10 by default, meaning 3/10 is actually pretty generous! lol)
-Thus, I'm basically working with a 2-9 rating scale, and I usually start every thing out with a 5 (neutral) and go up or down from there.

Also, I was trying to base my ratings only in comparison to other songs on the album. That's why Mr. Goodnight is 8/10. Compared to my all time favorite Prince songs, it would probably get a 6, but compared to the other sacchrin filled pop on Planet Earth, it rates higher.

I'm definitely not a hip-hop head--at least not what gets called hip-hop today. I do enjoy old school classics like Run DMC, Beasties (License to Ill), Sugarhill Gang, (vintage) LLCoolJ, etc. but I don't really like much of what the "kids" are listening to today. (Don't really listen to the radio at all, actually.)

My top 5 Prince albums (in chronological order):
Prince
Dirty Mind
Parade
Lovesexy
Black Album/Come (tied)

I'm one of those weird Prince fans who could take or leave SOTT and doesn't really like the Prince ballad. I don't think SOTT is a bad album, it's just not my style. (I like about 5 songs on it and prefer live versions over the album versions.) Same with ballads--doesn't mean they're all bad, I just find them boring. I think that's what's going on with PE. The music seems pretty good, not so sure about the lyrics. Doesn't mean it's a bad album, just not my style. shrug Now Emancipation--that's a different story...lol.

Some of my other faves:
Sam Cooke
Parliment/Funkadelic
George Michael
Stevie Wonder
James Brown
Motown
New Jack Swing
Chicago House

Different strokes, right? cool

ps. if you think I'm tough, wait until you hear what VainAndy's gonna say about this album. I'm predicting it won't be pretty. lol

OK, I guess will jump on the bandwagon and give my personal review on the record.

Planet Earth-
Still trying to feel this one out. I like how different the track is. I think Prince shines when he does stuff that isn't conventional. I was digging it until the cheesy keyboards came in playing the same melody as the background vocals. This one is a grower, not bad at all though- 7/10

Guitar-
I HATED both versions of this song when it was released as a single. But listening to it in context of the record, it works! I'm starting ot like it more, not my favorite tho... 7/10

Somewhere here on earth-
Amazing songwriting! Simply beautiful 10/10

The one u wanna c-
Great pop/rock track. This one is kind of a grower also, but a bit more immediate than guitar. Why was this the 2nd single and not the first? You're supposed to come out of the gate with a bang. C'mon P you know this. confuse 8.5/10

Future baby's momma-
This is a very good track. I like it alot. It has been discussed enough here, but if you're trying to gauge my taste, I do like this song alot. 8/10

Ok now here we go.....

Mr. Goodnight-
This songs gets a lot of flack here. So I figured I would like it because everyone else hated it. Wrong! Someone made a good point about having an producer or outside ear let P know that he has MUCH better tracks lying around. Why rip off the biggie song (who they sampled it from i dunno), and try to "rap" over it? P has too many yes men around him. I would have looked at him like- nah dude-next! The hook is kinda hot tho 4/10

All the midnights in the world-
Hmm I am a bit confused about this one. I want to say I appreciate this musically (the chord structure, the way he effortlessly swtiches from his natural to flasetto), but the fact is this song just isn't that good. This is where I Get lost. The same man who wrote Automatic wrote this?? I guess that's why i love the little guy, you take the good with the bad.-- 2/10

Chelsea Rodgers-
Ok everyone was ranting about how great this track is. I just knew I would hate it. I hated get on the boat and I thought it would be in the same vein. I do not like Prince's vegas funk. He's too clean to get stank with it like he used to do. His shit is too polished. Anyway, I digress slightly. This song is hot as hell. Shelby can sing her ass off. there are some parts that feel forced like the breakdown. But overall, it is great -8.5/10

Lions of Judah-
Ok WTF is this? He sounds like he is going through the motions on this song. Like he was hurrying trying to write a new track for the record. Nominees for cheesiest song on a Prince record... Holy river, Lions Of Judah (yes, I said Holy River zzz ) ,.....1/10

Resolution-
This is also cheesy. But not as bad as that bullshit I just sat through. However, I feel that if you are now playing with your old pal, let her get in on a few things. I don't really hear her on this track.....5/10

Overall the album is so-so. I need to listen some more. I have stopped expecting much from P unless I know he is locking himself in a basement studio with Korg, bass, guitar, and drum machine. I bet he would come up with the hottest thing. It's ok to embrace technology. He used to have the funkiest beats, lets get back to the funk man!!! Beck once said he would liek to lock Prince in a room with a guitar and a detuned piano. He needs to find his mojo- embrace that rude boy image that is still in him. Or maybe I am still wanting him to 25-36 instead of 50. It's me.....but I know what he is capable of.

Overall 7/10
