I still think that this song is his best of all time! Anyone else agree?

I know a lot of fans have a too-cool-for-school attitude about this song: "I hope he never plays it again, I'm sick of it blah blah blah"

But I still love it. Even listening to it on CD, if it catches me the right way, I still get goosebumps. Personally, if I were to go to a regular concert (not aftershow, or whatever) and he didn't play it, I'd feel like something was missing.

It's definitely one of his best and most powerful (and accessible).

I agree....that is some dumb bs...but I won't hold it against you. biggrin

Who mentioned popularity anyway??? Whether you get it or not, that is Prince's anthem and always will be.

so you agree that your statement was some dumb bs thumbs up! We are definitely on the same page then. smile

This wasn't about it being an anthem but his best song. If this was about it being his "anthem", I'd agree.

Popularity has been mentioned throughout the thread.

Nooo...I'm pretty sure I was talking about YOUR B.S. NOW we're on the same page wink I still think it is one of his best songs and I still don't get how anyone who considers themselves a fan don't think so.
Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

Based on your replies, that's a compliment.

you should try expanding your thinking.....its ignorant say someone isn't a fan based on one song. You can think that its sent from God but that has nothing to do with who is and who isn't a fan.

Limited thinking...shake

The Dortmund Lovesexy 88 version is pretty cool, but beyond that, this song is a borefest that has hamstrung Prince's career (as much as it made him a worldwide star) ever since the moment it was recorded and released. Chugging, plodding, jogging (I don't know if that's with a soft 'j') song. Should have been replaced on the album with a discussion between Prince, Wendy and Lisa about when music turns to cheese... possibly a 'backwards' conversation, keeping with the tone.

I recently convinced a friend he was a snob for not liking Beethoven's Ninth and Fifth. Of course, those are old Ludwig Van's best known symphonies, and wouldn't you know it? Plenty of Beethoven admirers dislike hearing them. But I told this friend "you don't like them because you hate the fact anyone can get into these right away". And I was right. One day he showed up at my desk and said he had walked all the way to the office listening to the Ninth and it was an epiphany.

I love Purple Rain but will only listen to it once in a while. As Prince's signature song, it's been played so often that I can only get into it every couple of months. But when I do "open my ears and my heart", I know it, Purple Rain is Prince number 1 classic song and it deserves to be. Even if I, a spoiled fan, won't listen to it more than once every now and then.
