Prince's guitar and bass work of Mavis' "Jaguar"

It's really excellent!

Especially his guitarwork, classic funky guitar in the vein of Controversy and Lady Cab Driver.

One minor note: i dont think the song and the lyrics reall suits Mavis personally, she does a great job on the vocals, but i am always imagening Tina Turner in tiger-pants when listening to this song biggrin

Good you remind of "Time waits for no one", i havent listened to that song in ages!

One of Princes most impressive productions for a 'protegee' (if you can call a veteran like Mavis like that of course) IMO.

The beats of that song are collosal, and impressive, the song always reminds me of a gothic cathedral, with the beats 'holding it up' firmly.

Mavis soulfull vocals are indeed splendid, but i must say the combination of Cat and Sheila E. on the background vocals is beyond expectation. Normally i think Sheila's vocals are a bit thin and weak, but on this song they really 'nail it'.

"Time waits for no one" album is excellent. The only weak point is the arrangment of "Train". The unreleased Prince version is superior.

And Mavis voice is beyond beauty!

Makes me think about the following: best albums released by Prince protegees.

In my opinion (and in this order):
1. Jill Jones - Jill Jones
2. The Family - The Family
3. Mavis Staples - Time waits for no one.

IMO these albums are better, more layered, more sophisticated then anything that ever has been released on Paisley Park, including the overrated The Time.

Hey, say what you will, but "The What Time Is It EP" served it's purpose. That album was flawless and my absolute favorite from them. Besides, the only bad side of that band is the self-overindulgence of "Morris Day" and if he would have just worked at crafting his lyricism, then "The Time" would have gone further, that's all

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I was so excited when I found that 12". I forget what I paid but it was a hefty price.

And then, as with so many remix chances I've taken, I was disappointed with the results. The album track is still the best mix IMHO.

I wish someone would reissue Time Waits for No One on CD. Haven't played it in years. I have it on cassette. sad

It's a dyanmite album, way better than The Voice IMHO.

I paid $1 for mine in a small East Texas town.

Anx and myself were just discussing this album.
I need to give it another spin. It's been awhile.
I remember it has quite a few of the Lovesexy crew on it.
Came out '89 so it was right on the heels off Lovesexy.
Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

Further? Like how? The Time, for all intents and purposes, was done when Prince fired Jimmy and Terry. That group went as far as it could go under the circumstances. And it did go far.

When it comes to the flack that they get ("AND" they get a lot), they didn't go as far as, at least, I would have liked them to go. I think that they should have done all of their own stuff and not just let "Prince" record their music for them (Granted, they are a great live band). But, those lyrics, if either written from "Morris Day" or "Prince", either way, it was always one-dimensional. But, the "MUSIC" sold me most of the time. Plus, I actually "LOVE" some of their songs as a whole. However, you've gotta admit, that given the right circumstances, they would have lasted along with "Prince" as his strongest protege and, hell, maybe even make it to the point when/where they had a household name that didn't always have to paired with "Prince" as his ultimate proteges. You know what I mean?

There was too much talent in that band for it to stay together for long. Those cats were starting to find their own voices - as Prince himself said, they were starting to become Godzilla...

And as far as the lyrics go, the cool, ladykiller persona Morris Day had in the band wasn't conducive to any deep, Dylanesque lyrics. "Gigolos Get Lonely, Too" is about as deep as you're gonna go with The Time. Besides, I seriously doubt if anyone got into the Time for the lyrical content alone. It's just like David Lee Roth era Van Halen. He was the party guy, the ringmaster of the Van Halen circus. Booze, broads and parties in California. That's what his image (and the band's image) was about. That's what they wrote about.

You can say the same about Jimmy Buffet and Buster Poindexter as well.
