Ok, here's my honest assessment of 1999-TNM

I'm going to disregard everyone on the maxi-single except the first track, which is most similar to the original song.

I do like the song. I actually think it's far less boring than the original, which to me was a boring, repetitious song that barely saved itself with a mildly slightly interesting ending leading into Little Red Corvette. I loved the album itself, but never cared for the title track.

The new Master, at least is musically more interesting, more fleshed out, and has more depth. I even like the Latin bridge (is it a bridge? or an interlude. I don't know these terms ) near the end of the song. What I don't like is Prince's actual vocal treatment--it's not as smooth as the original, and I strongly dislike the rap elements in it. They're just horrid.

But the music, instrumentation, and actual structure of the song (minus the glaring rap element) is more interesting to me than the original.

The stupid (Rosie Doug E. In the Deep House Mix) is so aweful that it's hilarious. To paraphrase Raze's comment that it sounded like a "constipated/trying-to-push-one-out" voice, I actually found myself completely balancing emotions of complete disbelief, discust, and sheer hilarity at the same time

This is the first Prince single / EP / project I decided not to buy. I don't feel the loss.

While it by no means improves on the original I don't think its that terrible. Just a few fun little remixes, whats the harm?

I can't agree with your assessment of the original "1999" though. It is perhaps the song that defines Prince the best for me- wickedly innovative, adventurous, full of metaphors and funked out to the max. More than any other song, this it has made me a fan of music. "1999" is my blood.

As a result, I can easily understand why many hate the new master. They think it pisses all over the legacy of the amazing original. Often, when a twerp artist covers a classic by one of my favorites, I get pretty peeved. But this is Prince updating himself. I think I'm such a megafan of the original song's sound that the fact that the new master sounds fairly similar in many facets still sends that blood rushing through my veins. Yeah, I'm not big on the rap, and don't get me started on Rosie, but I still dig it.

The original was the song that got me interested in pop-music.
Even though it's very repetitive. I remember hearing 1999 distantly on the radio, The next day I was in the record store asking for the new prince single. The guy said "the new 1", I said yeah, and he gave me let's go crazy.sounded like a party title for party music, so I happily took it home. and the plot thickened!

Next day, I bought 1999!
