If you think "Get On The Boat" is a funk tune. You don't know funk.

See....this is why I got pissed as hell back in 1982 when I heard "Little Red Corvette" being played on pop radio. We never heard remarks like this from Prince fans back when Prince was being played on R&B radio only. lol

I think it has more to do with crap like "Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance," "Life O' The Party," "Get On The Boat," and "Everyday Is A Winding Road" being passed off as "funk" on many of his more recent albums. If that's what passes for "funk" on a Prince album, then it's better that he just doesn't bother, and just leave it at the title tracks from the last 2 albums. If that's all the funk he's got, then don't bother trying to add any more just to make it a "funky" album.

sigh That's not what Raze is saying. I'll translate for you: s/he is saying Get on the Boat is being passed off (by Prince?) as funk, and it's not. If songs such as Get on the Boat, etc. are what Prince is passing off as 'funk' these days, Raze would rather Prince forget about funk altogether.

It can also be translated as, "Make my funk the real funk, I want my funk uncut."

Although I love funk and loved both of the last 2 albums I do hope this one is a bit different than them. Not nessicerily( I can't spell tonight!) less funk but more of the Prince we all love, like back in the 80's at the peak of his career with the Revolution. No not just Purple Rain but all of the Calssic Hits. I'm ready for some classic Prince.
peace & love. love God.

thank you. that's exactly what I was saying. i do like the title tracks to the last 2 albums, but the rest of the funk on them is faked.

That Prince prolly won't be bringin' the funk on this album either. I'll still buy it and prolly like a couple of cuts, but after I've listened to it for a couple of weeks, it'll just be left on the shelf to collect dust.

Dont get me wrong, i love Princ funkin it up, but for a guy who can do it all, his FUNK is stuck at this point. Its time for a lyric driven album, and Prince playing some guitar, his sampling/programming needs to be left behind just once, not that its a bad thing for him, its just being overused to death on the last two studio albums.

I disagree.

Not only should Prince play The Funk, he should also consider synth-funk, synth-pop, house (Chicago or French style) and pop-rock.

I'll agree with you that the sampling can stay gone from the studio. But synth programming should remain part of the creative process at all times!

it's pretty good, mostly the melody though. like a lot of that album, the production sucks all the soul (or in this case, specifically, the funk) out of it.

I just had to help you out because if these aren't the words in bold that you "MEANT" to say, then, WOW!!! He was great on "The Carter". Hell, he's even doin' alright, now. But, he's a bit overrated. He has still yet to surpass his influence in "Jay Z" when "Jay Z" was at his best (During the periods of "Reasonable Doubt" and "The Blueprint"). I could right his lyrics down. I might even be able to freestyle something in allusion to his style and swagger. In the end, he ain't nuthin' special. AND THAT ESPECIALLY GOES FOR "Mr. BOOSIE BADAZZ"!!! All of them will go in up in flames for this blasphemy of "Hip-Hop Pioneer": Kool Herc".

1. I love that this thread is full of people telling others what is or is not funk. I don't think there is a definition--it's a bit of a subjective term.

2. In my eyes the title track 3121 IS funk.

How could anyone ask that Prince leave the funk behind?? That's like asking someone like Britney Spears to actually sing.

Prince has funk seeping from his viens. He can never leave it behind, nor should he.

I love when he does rock and lots of guitar, but I always love the funk.

I understand what lastdecember is trying to say. Basically Prince shouldn't abandon the FUNK, but switch it up or make it as stanky as it was back in the 80's. Let's face it the funk we've been smelling on the last couple of albums has been kinda weak. It'd be great if it were by any other artist, but by Prince's standards, he just doesn't bring it like he did back in the 80's. Lastdecember probably thinks it's stale and formulaic due to the his keeping his ear to what's popular today. Come on, would you compare "Head" to "Illusion, Coma..." or even "DMSR" to "Lolita"? No way.

Another thing is that Funk isn't everything. I know the majority of you orgers love it when Prince gets down and dirty, but his music is more diverse than that and he's just as good in (almost) any genre. I'm with Smedley when he says that Prince can do what he wants as long as the music and lyrics are good. I can get into whatever kind of music Prince is doing as long as it's good. It doesn't have to be limited to just funk.

If you want some funk so bad avoid the shower for a week. Sheeeeeit! lol

If you cant find the funk in ICPC, or even Lolita, you don't recognize funk when its in your face. But to the title of this thread; How do you seriously, w/ a straight face, pose this question to Prince of all people? Do you understand who this person is? What on God's green earth are you talking about?
