Prince and the Friday night disco down the local... Britney followed by Robbie Williams. Perhaps the sugarbabes and Atomic Kitten. Eminem gets thrown in for good measure and theres shed loads of garage.
Just another average Friday night out with the lads in the local, a pretty amateur dj and loads of vodka and redbull. It’s a good laugh and everyone is getting drunk and dancing away to the cheese. So, you go up to the dj and his multi CD player and ask him if he has any Prince. The chances are he hasn’t. But occasionally he will oblige. So three or four tracks down the line you hear “and this one goes out to and ”. The speakers then erupt into Sexy MF and ……… er…… the dance floor clears except for yourself and that drunk bloke that has been stumbling around the dance floor all night. Your mates all roll their eyes and just accept that this is what you do. They all know about your obsession. Maybe a couple will dance with you out of sympathy or blind drunkardness. Who cares, at least you got to have a Prince track blare out of the system. So, why is it every time I request Prince, the only trax that these guys seem to have are either Kiss or Sexy MF? Perhaps because Kiss is the one of the most memorable songs in terms of the non Prince fan? Maybe because Sexy MF was the last hit he had that had the funk? Since Sexy MF there hasn’t really been a single worthy of these drunken dance fests on a cold Friday night down the local…. Which trax do hear the most when requesting our number one song-meister? (If you get any at all!)…..

Had a "Lets Go Crazy" once at a London student union 80's disco. Dance floor stayed pretty well intact but I know exactly what you mean, "Kiss" seems to be a firm favourite with the mobile disco guy! However when this happens people usually tell you they preferred the original version by Tom Jones!

LOL!! This is so true. Its now got to the point where people honestly believe Tom Jones did the original Kiss. WTF!! BTW, I am known to frequent tacky, cheesy 80's style clubs, and these virtually never play Prince. A very sorry state of affairs.I have to put up with Nena and Eddie Grant... -----------------------------------------

This is so true!I`m still laughing:-D
I once asked for a Prince-song(well,I do it everytime, but they usually refuse to play him),and the DJ played "Pope"! I was in heaven, but as you so elegantly said-I was alone.. I only hope the attention that Prince gets now(he is finally coming to Norway-its been 9 years)can wake up the radiostations and DJ`s-and maybe they can play something besides "Kiss","Purple Rain" and "Get Off".. Alright, anyone in London that likes Prince should try their luck with the the DJs at Cherry Jam, a pretentious but still very fun new club in Bayswater. Everytime I ask for a Prince record, I am absolutely shocked at what happens. First time, they played this absolutely mad remix of Erotic City, I mean the whole club was jumping! Everyone was getting down, and I'm sure I could have been the only one in that whole joint who KNEW what it was. They then mixed Slave 4 U with wait for it...Irresistible Bitch, Sexy MF and Kiss!!! The DJs there are simply off the hook, they know their Prince and somehow manage to get everyone into it. It's such a great feeling. Ok, I was absolutely plastered but that night was pure ectasy. I remember walking out and having all my friends ask me to record them some kick ass Prince music. This is 2002, and he still gets love.

When your mates asked you to record some Prince stuff for them did they ask you to use the Tom Jones version of kiss on your compilation - eager to know details because this defies all preconceptions on discothèque Prince.

Tom Jones did do the orinal! You should know that by now. Sinaid O'Connor did a really cool original too. Alicia Keys has just done the same. Ive given up trying to say that Prince did it first these days. Eyes just roll with the expression 'Yeah Jon, we know, Prince did everything'... Humph! Theres just no winning over some people...

When your mates asked you to record some Prince stuff for them did they ask you to use the Tom Jones version of kiss on your compilation - eager to know details because this defies all preconceptions on discothèque Prince. One of the DJs is called Andre. He usually headlines on Friday and/or Saturday night. I haven't been there for a while now but I really hope he's still playing. I remember on some other night, the 1st DJ was playing Stevie Wonder's 'Superstition' and Andre walked in and mixed the vocals of Gett Off and some of the music from the Houstyle remix over the top (again, I'm sure noone knew but me!) before layering the bottom eventually with the original bass line and drum beat. The place was smoking, that's when I knew this wasn't a one off. Maybe, Prince should employ him for his afterparties in London. Damn! BTW Cherry Jam is not the kinda place you'd hear anything by Tom Jones. Usually latino flavoured nuyorican soul house on fridays and funk ol skool style on saturdays, from what I remember. They usually mix it up to keep the crowd moving though.

My local club is one of the largest in the county of Essex in the UK.
It will play 'When Doves Cry White Label 2001' and 'Gett Off'.

God, these comments are so true, it's depressing!
Favourite clubbing moments: Dancing in a bar, in Amsterdam - 'Kiss' and 'A Love Bizarre' playing (a mate said 'You've died and gone to Prince Heaven'!

Dancing in a bar in Madrid - 'Let's Go Crazy' (which I find impossible to dance to), '1999' and 'Sexy MF'.

I requested a Prince song at a dance and the DJ surprised me by putting on some funked up version of I Wanna Be Your Lover.
It didn't sound like the version on the album. It sounded remixed with heavy bass. It went over pretty good, I stayed out on the dance floor which was pretty crowded

Ex-Moderator | We used to be lucky here in Mpls. Once upon a time on Tuesday nights in the VIP room at First Ave there was a DJ who played MAINLY Prince. It was Prince almost alll night. Everything from old stuff to new. Lots of old school Mpls Sound stuff too. It was fun too, cause he knew who the Prince fans were. If Prince wasn't palying, as soon as he saw us walk in, he'd throw Prince on next, knowing we'd get the dance floor going. Ahhh. Those were the days! |
