if it ended up on "The very best of..." I'm sure it was pretty big at some point.

it helped make that worth purchasing cuz i dont plan on getting Graffiti Bridge anytime soon (not many rave reviews about it)...

absolutely love the song, though.

Thieves in the Temple was a #6 single on the pop charts and certified gold. It was also #1 on the black charts. That's not "Kiss" big, but pretty good. MTV world premiered the video and played it frequently - it was also the first Prince video VH-1 ever played. They finally caught up to Prince by 1990!

The Graffiti Bridge album was a hit,

Thieves was a big hit...as some have said a Top 6 hit. Played frequently on MTV and BET often played the extended version of the video. "New Power Generation" would have been a hit but at the time a song couldn't chart until a single was released and it took forever for Prince or WB to get it out. Plus, the movie killed the album's momentum in it's track, except "Round and Round" which was a pretty big hit.

It was a top 10 hit but I would not ever say it was "big". Its not like it became a song you heard everywhere you went - cause it wasn't. And it was a hit that basically has never been played on the radio or V-H1 since it dropped off the charts. I mean think of it like this - "1999" was not a top 10 single but it still became a "big" song. It had staying power and new people discover its greatness regularly. "Theives" just came and went pretty quickly.
the music knows what your motives are when you are making it

Cheek

It was pretty big back in 1990 - top 10 hit on the both sides of the Atlantic. nod

I remember it was hugely played on MTVE (along with Girls & Boys eek ) - I wasn't a fan yet but I was always watching those videos! smile

Omg yes! All the time here. I guess that is why it became one of my favorite Prince songs.
