You mean Prince wasn't the first one who did this? I just heard this on GMA this morning.
40 years ago today, The Beatles released their infamous album "Sgt Pepper's Band"... I've never heard of this album, but it's apparently voted the best rock album ever made... but I'm not so knowledgable about the Beatles. They told the story behind it. The Beatles locked themselves in a studio for 4 months to record it (which was unhear of at the time). It's the first album where lyrics were poetry, all the songs fit together like a puzzle and they were the first ones to use a studio like a laboratory. Man, when I heard this, it kinda took a little of the magic away from Prince. I thought he was the first and only person who used the studio like that. But then again, he's not the first one to play guitar like that (Jimi Hendrix came b4 him) and have that kind of stage presence (James Brown came b4 him there). It makes him seem a little more human. He merely adopted such things for his own style & has made it work for him. Just goes to show what I know had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

And even spookier then that, that you would let someone else's success take away from your admiration for Prince is just weird. Sgt Pepper's is an all time great, go down in history album, but it should not take anything away from Prince. Side note...growing up, by brother was as a fan of the Beatles as I was of Prince. Have you been living under a rock your whole life? It's probably the most well known album of all time, next to Thriller. I'm sure there's a lot of things that you think Prince was the first to do, when he wasn't. Not to say he hasn't ever been the first to do something, he has. But probably a lot less than what you may think. Ouch.....knowing and appreciating The Beatles impact on modern music is the first step in understanding contemporary music. They were the first to do a LOT of things. If you want to understand where Prince's musical sound mainly comes from as well, you should look into some Sly Stone and George Clinton's bands Parliament and Funkadelic. Also some Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. I can't imagine you would have heard any of that stuff if you've been oblivious to The Beatles and had never heard of Sgt Pepper. |

I've heard the name... I just never knew who/what it was.
I'm 20... Prince is the first (and so far only) artist from "the past" (not huge/popular when I was growing up- from the 80's or b4)... so give me a little breathing room I doubt there's anything that can take away from the huge admiration I already have for his Greatness (just heard some incredible material of his for the first time today). I wanna go around saying that so-and-so stole Prince's thunder by doing w/e... but I can't cuz they did it first. I just didn't know. I guess that does prove that great minds think alike. My college roommate from freshman year was probably the hugest Beatles fans I've ever met. She'd play a lot of their music and their movies (i didnt even know they made any... but again, I wouldnt known Prince did 'under the cherry moon' & 'graffiti bridge' if i hadnt come here, so that shows what i know) and i do dig their stuff. I just haven't dove into headfirst. [and we apparently think alike cuz she's a huge Prince fan as well... just not quite sure how much, thu... we dont see each other much] I've dedicated myself 2 getting to know Prince, I hardly have the time for other artists anymore. wait a sec... was this the supposed album The Beatles did when they were high? not that it makes any difference 2 me, I'm just curious. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

Prince has been described as a walking encyclopedia of rock history, in that he encompasses a whole range of styles, music, moves, trademarks from various artists through rock n' roll history. The deeper the knowledge you have of pop history the more you can appreciate where Prince's music and style develops from, it certainly wasn't created in a bubble free from influences.
He is complicated, not some one-dimensional heavy metal band whose influence is solely Black Sabbath or something, and this gives his music great depth and a longevity to trying to understand and appreciate it. [Edited 6/1/07 9:33am]

now ive moved onto abbey road and the white album more but seriously check the beatles out I plan to... I just won't go out of my way to start a collection of their material. Doing it with Prince's stuff is already time-consuming enough. I thought the "age excuse" would work on u guys... but it's not like I was given this big introduction to The Beatles or anything. I'll get to The Beatles one of these days, but Prince will be my "artist of concern" for quite a while. There's so much stuff of his I've yet to get thru. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. Just goes to show what I know i went to a school where the music teacher played in a band that does Beatles covers, any project on the Beatles would score u top marks but still, Sgt. Pepper is a very popular album Wasnt it mentioned a lot when ATWIAD was released- can any older orgers help me out here seems that i was busy doing something close to nothing, but different than the day before

Pepper" has 2 be one of their most definitive albums. It was very revolutionary at that time, with the technology used to record the songs and watnot. Many artists that came after the Beatles name "Sgt. Pepper" as an album that influenced them. I wouldn't be surprised if Prince was influenced by it 2, or the Beatles in general. Sgt Pepper is pretty big. Kinda shocked that u didn't kno wat it was. But I forgive you... "So shall it be written, so shall it be sung..."

Maybe this can be the starting point for some of you young posters - and I see that there have been quite a few in the past coupla months - to explore other artists besides Prince. Perhaps you can see where he gets some of his influences from.
The Beatles, Paul McCartney (solo), Todd Rundgren, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Neil Sedaka, Shuggie Otis - these are just a few artists who were using the studio as a creative entity...There's some great music there - check 'em out when you get the chance My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

[Edited 6/1/07 9:33am] That's pretty much what I was going to say. Musicians have been borrowing ideas from eachother since the beginning of music itself. The Beatles had influences, and they have influenced other artists. Same with Prince. He was influenced by great artists, and now new artists are influenced by him. It's like the Circle of Life, or something like that... Wanna hear me sing? www.ChampagneHoneybee.com
