Has Prince gone against everything he stood for in the 90's?

Don't get me wrong--Prince can do whatever the hell he wants and I'm cool with it. I like that he does whatever he wants.

However, doesn't it seem like Prince has gone corporate in a way no imaginable during the slave/symbol era?

Superbowl.

Hollywood parties/award shows.

Verizon.

Macy's.

Disbanding the fanclub that supported him when he wasn't "hot" and mainstream.

Signing with Universal.

Again, I really don't care. I kind of like this resurgence of the commercial side of Prince. I liked when he did "batman" thang in '89 and I like that I see his face more in the media nowadays.

I just think it is interesting, and perhaps typical of him, that after nearly a decade of railing against all things corporate America that Prince has hopped into bed with it all.

He has done it all on his terms of course--I guess that makes all the difference.

Could it be that it wasn't actually about freedom, but that it was about power and control????

But seriously Skywalker, yeah he threw all taht out the window in '04. Must've figured it was his last chance to be recognized as the legend he thought he was before the name change.

my ex wife is a gemini and i still believe one of her is still very much in love with me LOL. seriously though, prince is rightfully warming to his status as worlds greatest entertainer and living legend. he's also has to hump harder because he's not guranteed traditional record sales anymore and he just picked up ex wife #2. he's also someone who envisioned alternative ways to get the music to the people so in this way he's being creative.

I don't know about the parties, cuz P was hitting those back in the 80's and early 90's. Let's be real If the super bowl comm had asked him back in the 90's to performed i don't think Prince would have turned it down. Plus, if we had the tech like we do now back in the 90's Prince would be on that too.

I think the difference is that he's not so much against the corporations, and never was, as long as they were throwing money at him hand over fist.

He's just put himself in a position where that's still the case, but they can't tell him what to do and have no control over his output.

Prince threw all that out the window when he married Mani .. he's pushing 50 .. probably he wanted another image.. he confuses me though cause 80% of what he was.. is what made him famous ..he now talks against it .. which I kinda think is hypocritical cause if Prince was 25 right now.. u cant tell me he wouldnt be singing songs like 'Nikki''Shh' or anything sexual .. and joining the JW's?? uhm no ..

Freedom is important and I applaud him for that.. power n control? well.. I still have mixed feelings on that whole WB situation ...100 Million is alot.. artists dont get offers like that..

I have to disagree, i dont think PRINCE has gone corporate at all, he just uses them when its to his benefit, which is something he said he would do way back in 1998. I mean take a look at alot of his work this decade....

The Rainbow Children
NEWS
XHALATION
One Nite Alone
One Nite ALone box set
and all the NPGMC tracks that went unreleased, including 2 web albums.

Now all this is between 2000-2004 pretty much, i think we focus on 3121/Musicology, because they were done on grand scales with tours and appearances, but i think he has kept a balance, and i feel that PLANET EARTH is going to be a combo of no label/major tour.

After hearing Piff Doody molest Erotic City and now Lil Wayne butcher Diamond and Pearls, I have to think Prince is going against everything he's ever stood for period!

There's something not right happening and I don't like it!!

Well, I certainly hope and pray that you're right because from where I'm sitting, this doesn't feel like "Prince is doing things HIS way", at all! neutral

Amen sister!!! (or are you a brother? biggrin )

I also want to say that you have to remember, this is a business too. He is doing things his way and he's using the corporations to do what he wants his way. That's my opinion. Yeah, he probably is doing things differently from the 90's, but dang, people change. He has ALWAYS been about doing things his way, and he is. His way of doing things has just changed since the 90's.

He can be the Prince from 1980 or prince from 1995, join the Ali Babbas & shave his head (well maybe not completely shave it), I really don't care as long as I get to see/hear more of him & as long as the music is on point. woot!

i think that he has gone corporate, but in a way that hasn't been done before. he's not molding his product to fit them -- he takes his agenda to them and they endorse it. i think this new scheme for extended club dates is various cities is brilliant. marketing a new album, with no label, thru a fone company -- again, brilliant. they want what he's got, and he stays free from the industry. he's playing by his own rules.
