How many people have you converted?

Over the last 15 plus years of being a Prince fanatic, my record of conversion has been very poor. I managed to convert my freind in High School and my cousin, but other than that, people have not responded to my repeated Princely advances.

I've tried all the usual tricks, hitting them with boots or tracks which we all know to be classics, but are unknown to the masses, but nothing has worked. I am stuck at 2 conversions.

How many have you converted, and how did you manage it?

...if you're able to take someone to a concert, that helps! I haven't made anyone as hardcore as I am, but every newbie I've taken to a concert has gone back at least once...they are very surprised/amazed by his shows because everything is done live...no tracks, no lip-synching. Nobody puts it down like he does!

Very true, but...
I wanted to take my girlfreinds brother, a big music fan, to the show earlier this year. He wanted to come along but £45 is enough to put any new "fan" off.
Would you pay £45 to listen to some music you'd never heard before? - I don't think I would

Not enough to earn my damn toaster oven that's for sure.

Oh! You meant to Prince music? No one that you'd consider a hardcore freak like me but yeah, I've turned quite into admirers of the man's genius smile

I can't think of anything worse. If someone really loves an artist and they start trying to convert me, it usually spells disaster. I like to discover music for myself.

I can think of two friends who showed interest in Prince

The first expressed an interest in his guitar playing, following which (and at his request) I simply made him a tape of guitar-based tracks. It resulted in him and his wife subsequently going to see Prince live (1990 - not a spectacular tour, you might think - and certainly not the most guitar-laden set-list).

Result: amazed at what they saw and heard, best live performance ever seen etc.. - and why had I kept it such a secret!!!

The second: really a friend of my wife's, has always wanted to see Prince live - probably so she could say she had seen him live (I thought). So I simply got her the box office number and she managed to get standing room tickets (I told her to telephone early - she couldn't understand how tickets could sell out so quickly for Prince: no publicity, no recent hits, no-one will be telephoning) for her and her husband at Hammersmith, October 3rd, 2002. Before they went to the show they also wanted to hear something of what Prince might be playing, so I made something suitable. They had it playing in their car on journeys for no more than two days before the show.

I met up with them a few days later fearful that they would be regretting the lack of hits, why was he preaching, 'he was good, but why didn't he dance etc.'.

Result: amazed at what they saw and heard, best live performance ever seen etc.. - and why had I kept it such a secret!!!

Funny thing was, we met up with them at a party they were hosting where they had a crowd of people, and they were trying to explain to others how good it had been, even playing the compilation I had put together. I was cringing. Of course, it didn't work, people's eyes glazed over, and they couldn't understand what the fuss was about.

They should have just left it.

But I didn't convert those friends. They found it for themselves.

And like Supa - they aren't hardcore 'converts' - but they now know when people talk about the latest Robbie Williams album being a work of musical genius and his latest show revealing him to be the master of live entertainment ...

Zero. Friggin' NONE.

I have converted more people to vegetarianism (4) than to Prince-fan-dom. This is AMAZING to me.

I'm taking ONAL on the rounds though. . ."no, but you really HAVE to listen to this one, he's AMAZING live, pleeeaaassseee just give him a chaaance. . ."

Screw them. Fewer fans means better seats and better soundchecks. Soon we'll be paying $600 to watch him play in somebody's backyard, and feeling priveledged to make him dinner afterwards. smile

Doves,
Mel!ssa

I have Converted 9 people..by perserverance, the deep cuts not the singles, and live shows. Live shows are on hit for conversions .One friend who went with me to the JOTY tour said and STILL says that was the greatest show on earth lol ( and he def was not about Prince.. yuck--I hated that tour). Another who saw the Lovesexy show with me said in the car right after the show "now I understand your concept-love of Prince". I remember that moment distinctly. Before he had asked to borrow Lovesexy tape so I let him...he came back saying "Annastesia...Annastesia".R.I.P. Dan..but to do it without live show ya gotta "teach a Prince class" , poonting out nuances, giving them th e history, etc while the music is playing. I have given many Prince classes impromptu and people listen if they have confidence in you. You have to know when to bring up references from others and show proof, etc..ya gotta have a meaningless reference log in your long term memory basically lol for use in this kind of stuff. If you are passionate enough to explain it with feling and nlwoledge, believe me..they will come around. Maybe not in your person but you better believe the next time they hear Prince, it won't be the same for them.

Dewmass you should make them a cdr with -
