I've posted a couple of mild "rants" about this on the org over the last few months. I put off buying it for a long time because nobody seemed to have anything nice to say about it. And of course I wound up enjoying it quite a bit when I finally added it to my collection. A good lesson in "choosing your own path". It is without question his most diverse album up to that point (although SOTT comes in almost neck in neck - but it was 2 discs, so...)

GB is also, technically, a double album.

You know... I just checked on account of your reply. I hadn't realized that there are the same number of tracks on GB as there are on SOTT.

Graffiti Bridge is a better album then Emancipation, New Power Soul, Rave, the Rainbow Children, NEWS, Musicology and 3121. Clear enough? biggrin

Romeoblu

I think it's a solid album with some real highs.

I like the title track but I always think I realy shouldn't like it. It's very cheesy sugary song to sing songy disney like, but I still like.

As for the rest, Can't stop is good but I prefer the 1986 version.
NPG is great

Release It, Cool song but isn't the bass line nicked fromsomewhere, I remember the last time I listened I thought that bass line is from so ans so a song, I can't remember now, maybe a Tower of Power song, it's more likely I was listening to them and thought that's the same bass line from Release it.

T Q Of U masterpiece, love the hand claps.
Elephants great song.
Round and Round is OK, I prefer the original before the Post production by whoever it was, sounds more in line with th rest of the songs.
WE can Funk again 1986 version rules
JIR masterpiece
Lovemachine great
TIck Tick Bang, I love this
Shake, cool song
TITT Good song
TLF is ok
Melody cool vg
still wouldstand all time fantastic

Tick Tick Bamg Bang Said it all! All over you!! I love the statement! Simple and to the point, That is as far as the movie is concerned. That whole music battle was one of my most rememberable scenes of G.B.

Nightcrawler

"Can't Stop This Feeling I Got"
"The Question of U"
"Elephants & Flowers"
"We Can Funk" (performed by George Clinton and Prince)
"Joy In Repetition"
"Thieves in the Temple"
"Still Would Stand All Time"

These are great tracks! The ballads from this album are maybe the greatest Prince ballads around. If he would have added two or three rock-songs to this tracklisting, the album would have been an absolute classic.

Love: New Power Generation ("Lay down ur funky weapon...!")
We Can Funk (though prefer the George-less bootleg versions floating around - I don't wanna hear about cups being peed into...)
Release It

Like : Question of U
tICK tICK bANG

Melody Cool (though it's ripped from "Sisters are doin' it for themselves)
Love Machine, Shake

Hate: Still Would Stand All Time (hello? is there a melody in there somewhere?)
Graffiti Bridge (Graffiti Shite more like. Fucking horrible)

Indifferent to the rest.

I've grown to love the film though...

Too bad the shit songs overpower the good tracks. I believe that many folks have such a bad taste in their mouths from the bad material, it gets put on the shelf.

"Can't Stop This Feeling I Got" – 4:25 biggrin
"New Power Generation" – 3:39 smile
"Release It" (performed by The Time) – 3:54 biggrin
"The Question of U" – 4:00 biggrin
"Elephants & Flowers" – 3:54 biggrin
"Round and Round" (performed by Tevin Campbell) – 3:56 confused
"We Can Funk" (performed by George Clinton and Prince) – 5:28 smile
"Joy In Repetition" – 4:54 biggrin
"Love Machine" (performed by The Time) – 3:35 smile
"Tick, Tick, Bang" – 3:31 biggrin
"Shake!" (performed by The Time) – 4:01 biggrin
"Thieves in the Temple" – 3:20 ill
"The Latest Fashion" (performed by The Time/Prince) – 4:02 confused
"Melody Cool" (performed by Mavis Staples) – 3:40 ill
"Still Would Stand All Time" – 5:24 biggrin
"Graffiti Bridge" – 3:52 ill
"New Power Generation (Pt. II)" – 2:57 smile

I think "The Latest Fashion","Release It" and "New Power Generation" are the weak tracks. Many of the other songs are good, but not great ("Round and Round","Melody Cool","Tick Tick Bang",title track). To me,this album has no real masterpiece on it.There isn't a single song that I would consider a "classic".

But when it's good,it's very good ("Can't Stop This Feeling I Got","We Can Funk","Thieves In The Temple").Overall,I'd say it's a mixed bag.

Joy in repetition is in his top 5 greatest ever songs. I dont even mind the version he put on the album. Question of U is immense, too.. the chord progression is beautiful (play it on a piano, it'll break ya heart).

Still would stand all time could be great, so much better live when he gospels it up and does it in double time (what is that performance by the way?)

We Can Funk - will take any version of this track... love the part where he sings "you can turn the candle on me baby... etc..." the music is mint during this section.. the tension created when he sings ",,said I, i'll make a love to u.. etc..". You can not fuck with it.

I enjoy melody Cool, too. That whole opening shimmer gives me goose bumbs im embarrased to say

fuck, i probably like it all.. it just doesnt get played that much.. never at the forefront of my mind.
