"Guitar" - 3121 outtake? or from the new batch? Has anyone found out if "Guitar" is a 3121 outtake or if it's a song from more recent recordings (like for the new album)?

btw, this song sucks. I listened to it today for the first time since the day it came out, and wow.... talk about underwhelming. I'd forgotten!
And what's with the 96kbps mp3 quality to the vocals? "Half of what I say is meaningless; but I say it so that the other half may reach you." - Kahlil Gibran

And what's with the 96kbps mp3 quality to the vocals? 2 each his/her own, I guess... I dig it. There R many classic Prince elements 2 this cut. It's like a cross between the 'Dirty Mind' (listen 2 the bass guitar) and 'Around The World in a Day' sounds, but current at the same time. As far as your question about the vocals, it's called EFFECTS. I love the effects on the voice, and the rapid panning. "He's a musician's musician..."

Me neither. Didn't it cost $3? I was not about to pay $3 for a song that everyone here was clowning.

What's ironic about this song is that it's so NOT a song that should be called "Guitar." But then, the irony of THAT is that the guitar part is actually pretty cool. Why is there more of it? Why isn't it more prominent? Too bad it's such a generic track (but then you could say that about most of his output anymore). It's like a 3rd rate version of Lolita, which is itself a 2nd rate version of.... well, lots of things. Should have been a balls-out rocker if he was going to call it "Guitar" instead of "Lolita" part 2. And what's with the 96kbps mp3 quality to the vocals? OK, maybe a misleading title, but actually I found it the best song in a long time. Loads of character, simple, but also quirky in an old fashioned Prince way like those magical 80s b-sides and I like the guitar in it. The acoustic sound is great too. I don't get why old time fans didn't dig it. It's a song that pops in to my head really often since I heard it when it first came out and not many songs of done that for over 10 years.

the song is cool..I just think like everything else in life..If u have something long enough its natural to care less and less after a while...Its not ground breaking..But cool...we already have heard and seen ground breaking stuff from Prince so its kinda average at best (for Prince)...Live im sure it would rock.. we all know that nobody can touch him onstage !

There's something about the sound quality/mixing that puts me off.

Guitar is a good example of why Prince needs some sort of editor. He is seriously endangering his legacy with each substandard release.
I would rather he take the 2-3 years off between albums (that other artists do) than to kick out this kind of stuff. Not EVERYTHING is meant to be released; some songs are "work-outs" to nail down a certain sound or technique, but really where Prince is lacking lately is lyrically.

Interesting this song really seems to have divided opinions. As an old time fan I really found this song touched on his old intriguing quirky sound which I'm sure any editor would have stopped him releasing. A lot better than any NPGMC stuff and a lot of musicology/3121. To me it really sounds like Prince and Prince only not trying to pander to any audience like 3121/Musicology. However his recording techniques lately, especially on 3121 I have found very suspect and I think perhaps someone needs to tell him that.

On the contrary, Some of the hits back in the day were recorded rather fast. A good mix of experimental and yet commercial. Commercial did not always equate following what others do, but if he took 3 years to record by 2009 the album would sound like 2007, 2008 and 2009! NPG (r-n-b FUNK) is cool but done over and over. At this rate, I'd take his experimental stuff over the commercial (trying to be like whats on radio or redoing old school funk). I would love to see some new collaborations, with the thought it might being a new vibe to the music. Prince is a visionary in the business world. The question is, the music still 5-10 years ahead of the pack??

I actually like the production and the unforced feel of it, but the melody is too unforced, ie, lazy. And, as many have said, there ain't enough guitar. It might work better in the context of an album however, a cool-down after a more intense track.

so anyway, does anyone know if it's a 3121 outtake or if it was recorded more recently in a new back of songs? possibly along with material from the new album? "Half of what I say is meaningless; but I say it so that the other half may reach you." - Kahlil Gibran

my opinion, doubt it was an outtake
probibly from an album/project he was working at the time... (That will nver see the light of day) Guitar & Feel better Feel Good . both have that same feeling ,sound . As if posibly recorded around the same time. i love this song when ever i play it, i play it over and over

Kinda like SST and Song Of The Heart. Not tied to any Prince album.
