It's no longer about the music While we can't criticize the man for doing it, Prince is no longer about the music -- he's about Prince. No longer does he buy nightclubs so he can jam and play new songs every night (glam slam in the nineties played 80% new stuff), now he plays slick tired versions of hits, semi-hits, and covers at vegas clubs to sell perfume and bankroll on exclusive concerts.
Yea, he's performing 20+ concerts in the UK -- but these will continue his slick covers and hits w/ very little new jams. Further, he's doing it only to broaden his customer base so he can either open a night club, sell future items, and maintain his image overseas. Ironically, he released musicology to get back to the music. He's never been further from it. Like I said before - yea, I know he deserves it. So don't base criticism on that.

just don't tell prince that the only reason i'm going to macy's on 7/7 is to hear him perform.

The only reason it's not about the music anymore. Prince can make more money from concerts then making music. Hey cut the guy some slack 10 years ago Prince couldn't even sell out 1concert in Detroit why in God's name do u wanna make me cry

I was thinking that he's doing all these corporate gigs before he goes on his sabbatical to study. Kind of like squirrels putting away nuts for winter.
Do y'all really think he's gone corporate on us??? Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

So is Prince no longer about music, or are you just dissappointed in the selection of music that he plays? I think we should wait and see how the UK shows roll out. He claims the band have been rehearsing 150 songs so let's see how many covers and hits he goes into. Now as far as him bankrolling some exclusive concerts, well, that's kind of his right to do and nobody else's to decide for him. [Edited 5/30/07 19:44pm]

Like I said before, he has paid his dues many times over!!! Let the man be. He has nothing more to prove. Now, he can have some fun and be a musician and not have to maintain the "superstar" status. Sorry you young'uns, if you're just discovering him and you want to see more. It may be too late. The old schoolers saw a lot more (skin & all)-(Dirty Mind & Controversy Tours) back in the day!

i thought about that. You have the ole skoolers who have been really spoiled with concert experiences of the past and are not used to the way he's doing things now, and you also have new fans who probably missed out on Musicology or live overseas. But if you look in retrospect in the amount of years he's performed for reasonable prices, you know, I think he's done his do. [Edited 5/30/07 19:49pm]

Well, and I may be wrong here... because of what I'm basing it on, BUT - the last time I saw Prince (UK, Hammersmith) he played loads of stuff off his latest album - TRC. I'd seen him at Wembley (With Chaka and Larry) and he played Hits... probably one of those other 'last' times we were ever going to hear them hits tours... This time, he is coinciding a tour with an album. I believe he played a number of tracks of Musicology on the Musicology tour, and I'm sure he's played a fair few 3121 tracks during the Vegas stay. I reckon this show will feature some new album stuff and, in all probability, material less familiar to a number of the audience he plays to in London and LA.
Once an artist gets to twenty years plus in the business, it's no wonder their shows consist of 'old' material. They play the stuff that made them famous. At least Prince pays us the courtesy of varying it once in a while.
