giggle woops, i was talking about the come cover, though i like that ATWIAD painting too, just not as the official cover. i like what they used for the official cover. though that painting would have made for a good advertisement or something. it should have been used somehow, just not as the album cover.

totally. many of the boots released on sabotage and others have
had much better covers than some of his actual albums, lol.

i hate the covers for The Gold Experience and New Power Soul with
a passion.

how could he put that horrible typefont on TGE? along with that
lame picture it ruins the total feel of the album.

with a different, more slick cover and some more cool pictures
of him and the band, performing, him in the studio etc this cd
would feel much more like the thing it was promoted to be.

he hyped it for so long and spent so much time on changing the
tracklist and dragging it around everywhere he went and yet an
artist to make so decent artwork probably wans't to be found
through all of this.

if nothing else they should have just kept the gold cover they
allowed David Letterman to show when prince performed dolphin.

Agreed. Much of the '90s artwork is so awful it almost ruins the ethos of the projects. I can't immediately think of any packaging I like between, say, Diamonds & Pearls and The Rainbow Children.

I think the artwork for Diamonds & Pearls, The Hits and Come are all wonderful.

Agreed. This one smokes the one that was used. Why P didn't go with this one, I don't know.

i think it's a little TOO representational and literal minded. i think the one they actually used for the cover is better because not only is it more whimsical, but it also leaves a LOT of things open to imagination and interpretation. i used to stare at that thing for HOURS, trying to figure out which characters went with what songs, and who prince was supposed to be on the cover, and why sheila had a moustache, and blah blah blah. that unused painting is beautiful, but look at it for a couple of minutes and you're like "okay, i get it." not quite as fun, really. confused

I can get with this. It's nice because it was officially sanctioned and you can tell the artist put a lot of time and work into it. But you don't get the same kaleidoscopic, psychedelic feel with it that you get with the official art. I like using it for my own means though. mr.green

The Herb Ritts stuff for The Hits actually is pretty good. I could do without the Come packaging.

I agree, they are. To a certain extent I can even dig the Emancipation
artwork.

But beyond that all his 90's releases were horribly packaged. The feel
of an album or period became less and less defined in the way it had
been in the 80's when an album was a total package of music, artwork,
tour and look for prince and his band.

i do too. in fact, the 'sacrifice of victor' stuff is some of my favorite photography of prince. his look was SOOO over the top, and the photos were so dark. good stuff. drool

I liked the photgraphy for Come. I would have enjoyed it more, though, if the packaging included a full booklet, rather than the fold-out poster thing.

I think someone should go on photoshop and create alternate covers for several of the albums that the majority of the orgers dislike the artwork of (NPS and TGE for instance) and post them here. Hell, while they're at it, make alternates to all the covers! I'd love to see what someone would do with SOTT, 1999, PR, Parade, GB, etc.

Good points and very true. I do like the fact that u can't tell which one is Prince. Everyone else in the band are dead giveaways. U do know that Micheal is on the cover, right?

out of all the pictures from The Gold Experience era these two are the only
ones i like. they would be nice for a front and back cover to the album imo

this one for the front cover, with the gold o(+> on the left side of his
head in the open space. and the title of the album on the right side of
his head in a cool gold shimmering font.

this one for the back cover with the tracklist on the left side running down
that 'wall' in some quirky gold font with possibly highlighting blue shadows

it's not the best possible cover but i would have liked something more open
and honest like this a lot more than the cover it's got now

The typography on his albums since N.E.W.S. has been absolutely shocking!!! Wish his designer was better with type, musicology and the back of 3121 is awful!

yeah, it's like they're not even trying to cover up the fact that
it's like prince emails the cover and the tracklist and yells thru
the phone "i need it back completed in 5 minutes!!"

biggrin

i miss the days when cool type fonts were picked like with Lovesexy
or Sign O The Times & Graffity Bridge. Even "The Truth" had a few
rather cool fonts with all the songs being in different ones. very
cool disc label that one is.

the funniest thing to me is the Musicology liner notes. I guess they ran out of that font halfway through the lyrics lol

This unused one above looks cheesy like corporate art (in my opinion), all realistic, and not cool. That's exactly why the artwork for Graffiti Bridge was such a disappointment, it looked like art for a Xerox brochure that was trying to be creative, as does this unused artwork... razz

The artwork they went with officially for "Around the World" the album and singles is brilliant and impresses even my artistic friends today.

I agree. And whats even better about it is that it matches the music inside the cover - psychedelic and whimsy. And experimental.

sure:

artwork is the actual images. the drawings, the paintings, the actual imagery.

layout is how the artwork and information is arranged on the album sleeve or liner notes booklet - where the title and artist name appears on the cover, the font they use, how the artwork is centered or if it bleeds off the borders, stuff like that.

i'm not the best at explaining these things, but i hope that made sense.

my impression now is that there is a bit of prince represented in each of the characters on the cover. when the album first came out, i thought he was the robed character hidden in the corner behind the other two robed people...the guy with the purple cowl...because he wore that purple cape to the oscars and wendy pretty much looked like the girl on the see-saw on the album cover. then the raspberry beret video came out and blew my theory out of the water. lol

some people say they think the character in the purple cowl is supposed to be sly stone. interesting. shrug

i've heard people on here say that he's the guy in the purple cape, too. i'd believe it's sly over michael (i'm not sold on it being either), but who knows? maybe blackguitaristz had a different character in mind...
