Zero Promotion = SUPERB CD ? Since there is absolutely no promotion
for the new CD , can we surmise it is spectacular? Its either incredible or he's giving the outtakes we always wanted.

There is still time before the cd is released for some promotion.

I think that a more "all encompassing" question is - will it be released via a major lable? Certainly if he were still working with Universal they would have pushed for some sort of promotion by now. "You've got a million dollar smile, but you can't buy time...

you missed the point TRC, NEWS no promotion. GREAT stuff. Musicology , 3121 all out promotion. Mediocre stuff.

you missed the point TRC, NEWS no promotion. GREAT stuff. Musicology , 3121 all out promotion. Mediocre stuff. Actually what I was getting at was the notion that if he has prepared an album in the vein of Musicology or 3121 geared toward comercial success he will likely have sought out some sort of major lable to back it, thereby giving it a chance to reach a larger audience and become more successfull. And, by the same token, he's not likely to bother with much promotion for an album that has little or no hope of commercial success (ie TRC/NEWS). Given those factors a major lable backing the album would certainly have at least some bearing on the direction of his new release. "You've got a million dollar smile, but you can't buy time...

Musicology , 3121 all out promotion. Mediocre stuff. TRC and NEWS got the promotion and sales they deserved... Also, I wouldn't say 3121 got much promotion at all. Prince was entirely absent from view for weeks after it's release.

Absolutely! I love NEWS and TRC, but no fool would bother putting any kind of effort or money into promoting albums like that when they obviously have no shot at becoming comercially successful. It's probably lucky that they were distributed as widely as they were. Not forgetting, of course, that NEWS was nominated for a grammy! Good point about 3121 though. While he did do a few public stints (not the least of which was SNL), it all seemed rather half-hearted looking back. The album debued at #1 though and was very widely distributed by Universal - which is great promotion in and of itself. So since Prince mentioned "direct marketing" at his last press conference, are we to assume that there is no "major lable" deal for this release? Prince has a lot of of eyes on him now. If he drops a cd in the near future, it should do fine. I know I can't wait to see what he's got up his sleeve.

It is great promotion to those who already pay attention to that kind of stuff but, I think, it was a great chance to parlay the energy of that #1 into a semi-hit single of some sort. Right when Prince should have been tearing up the TV performance/talk show circuit, etc, he was gone... It's like the moment that advert came out about it being #1 that all promotion essentially ceased for the longest time except for the Fury video that was finally tossed out. Heck, he could have increased sales quite a bit just by sticking the release on iTunes at some point. So since Prince mentioned "direct marketing" at his last press conference, are we to assume that there is no "major lable" deal for this release?
I don't think we can state that either way. I think it's highly probably he might do something with it himself first but I wouldn't rule out a major label later if it's a fully fledged album. Despite all of his talk and badmouthing of them, virtually every "real" album from him has been delivered via a major.
