Today's Guardian has an intelligent review of Brian Morton's book, saying that the book is good, but Prince is more of a genius and the music so much better than it suggests. A point well made!

Gosh, this is a good review. There are so many complexities to P's songs that go way over my head. Despite what sounds like a thorough book of the man, i'm not that interested in reading any biogs, not at least during his lifetime.

I kind of feel that as long as he's still around i'm more interested in what he's doing now than in the past. Just my opinion.

Obviously he has been influenced by other musicians, but he is possibly as generous with praise and has had probably more straight out collaborations with artists who have influenced him than anyone. He's name checked them in songs. The idea of 'Thief' is that he's stolen. He's stood on their shoulders and celebrated them with genuine respect.

that WAS a great review. i like the point of the stylistic influence overall that P has had, but individual songs being to much of masterpieces to influence. makes me want to go back and listen for some of the things he mentioned in very technical terms. he was up to date too, citing Get on The Boat and The Word.

That was a very incisive piece. The positions of both reviewer and author on the brilliance of Parade hopefully indicate a continuation of the re-evaluation of that album, which remains, even moreso than Lovesexy, Prince's misunderstood masterpiece.
