"It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" is an over-long track that just seems like filler, imo.Just think of all the great outtakes that could have taken it's spot on the album..."Wonderful Ass","Good Love","Rebirth Of The Flesh","Heaven",etc. "Play In The Sunshine" rocks!! The lyrics aren't really that great but musically, that thing is ferocious!

Most Prince fans love this cd. It is my second favorite album, please listen to it a few more times.

I love the CD but think that and Lovesexy are over-rated.
Sure, Forever In My Life is possibly one of the finest Prince songs, as is The Cross and Starfish & Coffee. But jams like U Got The Look, If I Was Ur Girlfriend and It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night are fairly weak and sub-standard. As for Lovesexy, take of Anna Stesia, Alphabet Street and Glam Slam and you're left with a fairly weak album. Now Emancipation on the other hand or Parade - that is Prince at his best!

NO, don't HATE it...it's great...however, would I say it's his best? That is something that I don't know. What I do know is that it isn't MY favorite. That would be LOVESEXY! "Love is God, God is love

and if "adore" don't move ya...u need help. I totally cracked up when I read someone on the old org post that it was 3 years before she ever heard Adore. She had the vinyl release and her explanation was that she never had the energy or the time to finish the album all the way through. Ever heard of picking up the needle and checking out the last song you never got to? lol! This is true though, it don't get much deeper than Adore and if you are numb to it, you need to check your ass into a mental institution! 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I can understand a new or younger fan not appreciating sign o the times. If you're say...under 23 and trying to take in the entire Prince catalog, then SOTT could just pass you buy if you didn't take enough time to appreciate it. For me, SOTT came out when I was 16 and it was, and still is incredible. A lot of times, we hold dear albums that came out during our highschool days or glory years or whatever. Still to this day, I say it's his best work, but I know that I may not say that if I grew up in the 90s instead of the 80s. If it breaks when it bends, you better not put it in.

Ahem, I dig those songs too. "Band Of Gold" is heartache and big bass on wax/cd. Don't dig Madonna, but "Holiday" is cool to dance to - that's what it's for. Maybe where i differ from most on this site is that i like almost all of his material. Even songs that are not my personal favorites I am able to see the merit. So i won't be on here arguing that "housequake" is weak while "it" is the jam. Best thing about prince is that he is a 360 degrees artist. If u listen closely he will always lead u back to what u may personally like. Open your mind to the other 300 degrees he has to offer and not just the 60 that are in your comfort zone and u will grow along with him.

Well now, although I suspect foxylee might just be fishing for flames with this thread, I'll respond as best I can I don't "hate" SOTT - what is there to hate? But I do agree with the people who felt it is somewhat overrated. I thought some of the tracks like "It" and "Hot Thing" are only great because we know them so well On the other hand, albums like Lovesexy, Emancipation, the Rainbow Children, and Around the World in a Day just hit me a bit harder on that first listen, and I prefer them to SOTT. That's my preference anyway. Funny, Exodus is actually one of my favourite Prince records but some parts of it really stink now. Like the telephone call segue before "Get Wild". And actually, the lyrics of "Get Wild". And all that cursing on "Count the Days". Doesn't matter though, it's a funky album and I can listen to it from start to finish without grimacing too much. I find myself skipping tracks a lot when I listen to SOTT. The only track I skip on Emancipation is "the Human Body" because Prince's cack-handed efforts at techno just fails miserably.

ian said:[quote]I thought some of the tracks like "It" and "Hot Thing" are only great because we know them so well Actually I would say the opposite. These are incredibly catachy songs that perhaps lose their edge after repeated listens, lacking the depth of the rest of the material. On the whole, I can certainly understand people not engaging with the genius of the record. Fans of Prince comprise a broad church of musical refinement, and it must be kept in mind that like any popular artist there are some fans of Prince who are less adventurous than others, prefering straight-down-the-line pop (Gold, Rave, etc) to Prince's more complex work. Whoever said that the CD is poorly mastered was spot-on. I often wonder how some of these songs would sound with the aid of contemporary mastering technologies. Think, for example, of the version of "Crystal Ball" released in 1998. And like most Prince records it could have been improved through the inclusion of some of the outtakes. Rebirth of the Flesh and Crystal Ball are simply sublime- if music critics became aware of these songs alone (I daresay most casual Prince fans who work as critics would not have heard even the latter, since it never entered the commercial promotion cycle that sustains music criticism) they would explode with excitement. And these songs are by no means the only ones. I think if all of the material from the Camille/ Dream Factory/ Crystal Ball projects were available to the public it would be broadly regarded as some of the greatest music ever recorded. It is a real shame, but I guess we should feel fortunate that we have (illegal) access to bootleg copies of many of the songs.
