Am I in the twilight zone thread...many critics panned it? Huh? Album of the year in the Village Voice yearly poll, NME the same thing I believe ..many more positive reviwws. I never seen one critic pan it and I was there for damn near every article writtin about it. RS's Kurt Loder praised it but some may think he was skeptical because he felt he didnt exactly "go for it" completely. Thats another thread.

I sort of agree with you on certain points but there is no reason to baby somebody..being introduced to Prince by DP etc. is just...wrong.

lol, you do make me chuckle rd. I can never quite work out wether you are being tounge in cheek with your comments, but I am slowly getting the feeling that you are not. Anyway, I like the friction it creates with some others here, keep it up.

Sorry if the phrasing wasn't quite right but my point was that at the time of its release it wasn't praised as it is now.

The scary thing is that many new fans are only hearing P.'s 80s work via the piece of shit sounding CDs. Most of them are disgraceful and sounded like crap back in the 80s when I first bought them; that Warners is still selling this garbage 15 years later is unbelievable (I'd buy the vinyl, only I'm a complete tight wad, and think $45 for SOTT is OTT). Probably the only artist with a poorer sounding back catalogue is Bob Dylan.

For me the trouble with SOTT is that half the stuff just sounds like demos. Side 3 in partic. suffers, and I much prefer the fuller sounding movie versions. But then the movie itself was not exactly perfect. Why that god damned "video" of 'U Got the Look" was slapped in the middle; well, I'll never follow the logic, especially as the live version was supposed to absolutely kill (there is a longer version of the movie that includes stuff like Kiss, no? Any hope of an Alt version on DVD?? Yeah, I can dream...). Prince always manages somehow to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, doesn't he? Little bitch!

Funky: Housequake is THE definition of funky. The bass drum kickin' and the horn section is the embodiment of FUNK
PERFECTION.
I suggest you hear the Mo'Quake version of
Housequake as well.

Slow Love and Adore are beautifully arranged R&B ballads
(Adore being my favorite).

Sign of the Times is not exactly something you can take in on
3 listens. I was kinda overwhelmed by it when I first bought it at 17. Housequake was my immediate favorite, then Sign of the Times grew on me. U Got the Look was a funky but rockin' tune, and If I Was Your Girlfriend had everyone (non-Prince fans) thinkin he was gay.

This album was the first he made with his new band after disbanding the Revolution. He originally had more material that Wendy and Lisa co-wrote with him, but he scrapped most of it in favor of what he released, which was an experimen-
tation/exploration of changing his musical style so to speak.

You probably need to listen to it a few more times before you
make a full judgment on it. My twocents

Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion of course...but I cannot comprehend how any true Prince fan can possibly HATE Sign O' The Times...

That album is a true masterpiece. Prince at his best. Think about it...he gave us romance w/ Adore, made us tap our feet w/ It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night, got raunchy w/ It and then threw sprituality at us w/ The Cross. All on ONE album!

So maybe, foxylee, you meant to say that "you don't care for it" or "it sounds strange to you"...but HATE???

i must admit..it took me two years to appreciate Sign of the Times...but then, i had just become a freshman in highschool and had more pressing issues then music...i wasnt even really a big prince fan till after highschool...only reason I bought the album was because i thought wendy and lisa were still with him...i was wrong...or at the time i thought i was wrong...with each year i hear alternative versions of these songs, (w/ w&l)...that was the cool part for me...all the mystery...

damn the internet for ruining that for me...

Just so you can start enhancing your musical knowledge, I'll point out that "fast" is not a very important attribute in funk aand certainly not r&b (where you want thear the singer's words). In funk, you'll notice the first and third beat are hit a littel harder and kinda drag, but that's what makes you shake yo' ass. Count it off on "HouseQuake" and "Hot Thang"

Nope, no Twilight Zone, you're right. I don't know who those critics are, but I've never heard or read anything even remotely unenthusiastic about it from them when it was new, nor today. And actually, I think most critics deem it his best album.

Opinions, opinions - isn't that what's great about him & his music - it evokes so much feeling in people!!

So some people don't like SOTT - it's not a crime (I know some will disagree!)

The fact is some people gett off on different strains of music.

I'm sure there is people out there who gett into Prince through TRC - (Although God knows where they would've heard the music prior to purchase) - If they like that they may not like some of his earlier funkier stuff like Lovesexy yes etc

Each to their own - I say.

But as a parting comment - You must be mad not to like SOTT!!

'SOTT' is definitely one of my Top 3 Prince albums (the other two would be '1999' and 'Love Symbol').It's one of Prince's strongest albums ever,filled with great songs.There's only two songs that I'm not too crazy about,"Starfish And Coffee" (kinda silly) and "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" (pure filler).The rest of the album is excellent.

I remember reading a review where a critic complained that the album is "unbalanced".I was like "what the...?" Would he rather Prince do a 2-record set where all the songs sound alike? Sheeshh!
