Prince's Most Underated Album I get sick of people slagging off Batman. The question is- is this the most underrated of Prince's Albums?

Yes. I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.

Hmmm, personally I think Batman is rightly low-rated. (Especially viewed in the context of the immaculate run of albums which preceded it.)

Commercially, the album is much more popular than it deserves to be and artistically, well... I certainly wouldn't say it shows much artistic growth. It's a collection of random tracks with often thin lyrics that exemplifies the type of music people would slag off on him for later in his career... So, overall, no I don't think it's underrated in general. Now, that doesn't mean people shouldn't enjoy it for what it is. At this point, I'd say Come is the most underrated. People lose sight of reality due to the "contractual obligation" label.

If the music is good, it is good and the circumstances in which it was released have nothing to do with the quality of the songs.

I reviewed Come in Melody Maker at the time, and was mildly baffled by the lack of fanfare from the record company (I had to really hassle them to even send me a copy), but I just shrugged and got on with listening to it. I thought it was a stunning record. It was several years later that I even found out about the 'contractual obligation' thing, and I'm kind of glad about that, because it allowed me to enjoy listening to it unencumbered by that knowledge. If you know what I mean.

Exactly, Prince may have been playing games with WB during the time it was actually released but it's obvious that, at some point, he loved these songs too.

I know. I, also, found it odd that WB didn't do more to market the album themselves. I mean, even though it does have a rather experimental bent to it, it's a quality record with several serviceable tracks - and 'sex' sells.

The album, right now, doesn't jump out as being "super special awesome"... but I don't find it boring or unbearable. Diff. tracks hit me differently each time. I kinda let it take me over last night and the transition from song to song was so smooth that I could barely feel it. My fav. transition was from Dark to Solo, cuz I think it took me into the depths of Prince's mind, phew, it was Based on what I hear, it's gotten some heat from long-time fans (meaning those who've been with him from the beginning and this is when they decided to call it quits). I don't really notice anything of what he was going thru with WB in it. Although "Letitgo" kinda sums things up pretty good... and Solo as well. Those 2 in particular (actually, maybe Dark 2) are the only ones that show any evidence of what was going on. It still doesn't take away from it. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

Of late, I think some people are giving this album a chance again, but it's way more underated than I, (or Theo ) would like it to be. Take off "Right the Wrong", since that seems to be the most disliked track, and "I Rock, Therefore I Am"- and you've got a great album. Ask where they're going, they'll tell U – "Nowhere"
