Mix for 10 and under? Ok, all you fams out there who like to share their love of Prince with their younger kids. . .I need to make a mix or two for my kids that won't assault their senses, but will be fun for them. I know I can go through my collection and listen more closely to every word, but I'm hoping some of you may have already done that work for me!
Any suggestions? THX! | |

I was a fan at 13, but there is a big difference between teens and younger kids (under 10). Luckily Prince has songs that are appropriate for all ages. If your kids like to dance, I'd add Get on the Boat, Let's Go Crazy, Live 4 Love, and Play in the Sunshine. [Edited 5/12/07 15:58pm] Wanna hear me sing? www.ChampagneHoneybee.com

Elephants and Flowers One of the Partyman remixes Don't forget your username! That's a great one. One of the first (if not THE first) Prince songs I ever heard (age 8 or 9). I made a mental note at the time to NOT check him out. A year later, Batdance got me interested. I don't think I Wish U Heaven is really one for kids.

The video is whimsical, and there are plenty of la la la la la la's for kids to sing along to. Maybe not all kids would like it, but it certainly isn't inappropriate. When my daughter was around 8 she loved the song "Angels".
I wanted to add...I've never met a child that didn't like "7". [Edited 5/12/07 17:37pm] And that says what?

Hi RumandRaisin, I certainly don't mean to underestimate---but as a mom, I really don't want my 8 year old son hearing the most explicit of Prince's stuff. At this point, girls still have cooties and kissing is gross. . .know what I mean? Not only do I not want him to hear it, he would probably think it was disgusting. But the day will surely come that I fill him (and my 6 year old) in on all the variety that is Prince--both before and after he cleaned it up a bit. Thanks for your response.

I agree with you on a few of those, but do you have or have you had kids that age? Anything "sexy" usually elicits an "ooooo, GROSS!," plus hearing your 6 year old sing "You sexy mutha" isn't that attractive when she does it at school . . . LOL! But, to each his own. Truthfully, my kids already know all the words to Lolita (but the "imagine me on the tip of your tongue" part kinda makes me squirm when they sing it... ) Thanks for your response, though.

My nephew is 8 years old and he was living with me until a few months ago. He got into Prince quite a bit when he was 5. Saw Purple Rain (although I covered his eyes/ears for certain bits) and particularly Under The Cherry Moon. He never seemed to have a problem with anything 'sexy', and he took quite a shine to Wendy, and 'Apples' in particular. FINALLY, I get to take him to a Prince gig in August!

My son was RIPPED when I got to go to 3121 twice without him. He actually asked me one day if Prince was still going to be doing concerts when he was a grown up so he could take HIS kids. From his lips to God's ears!

I didn't say it was inappropriate, just unappealing musically - in my experience it's just not one that kids like (which included me as an 8 year old). Too whimsical and light. But let me try it out on my 8 year old nephew and see what he thinks.

Thanks for your response. when i was 8 i first started to get into prince, bought myself his first four albums then. i had no problem hearing some of his more sexual stuff, heads got that amazing synth solo. i got my mum into prince, which took some time. id constantly hear her singing "i wanna be your lover" or "face down" (which wasa weird somehow she learnd the lyrics so fast???!!!!) anyway, were going to see prince 17th aug. but mainly, just think that the songs evryones recomending are sort of underestamating kids, i would never hold back songs like p.control and sister if i had kids. i know the most about music in my school, becuse i listened to prince when i was younger.
