I was a fan at 13, but there is a big difference between teens and younger kids (under 10). Luckily Prince has songs that are appropriate for all ages.

If your kids like to dance, I'd add Get on the Boat, Let's Go Crazy, Live 4 Love, and Play in the Sunshine.

Happy Feet razz

I think you mean "The Song of the Heart". but the whole soundtrack for Happy Feet is great for kids. alot of jumpy and catchy music. It's also a pretty nice way to introduce them to the Beach Boys, Prince, etc.

Let's see. I'll go from the albums I own.

Everything on Purple Rain except for "Darling Nikki"... Computer Blue might be a little iffy (cuz of the line "there must be something wrong with the machinery").

TMBGITW, Dolphin, Gold from TGE
Race & Letitgo from Come (there are very few "safe" tracks on it)

Everything on Musicology except for:
Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance (that one might be a little suggestive, I u dunno) and On the Couch

And everything from 3121 except for: Black Sweat (a little suggestive), Incense & Candles, Satisfied, and The Dance

Everything from ATWIAD except for: Tambourine & Temptation

Thieves in the Temple, Diamonds & Pearls, and Money Don't Matter 2night are also good as well.

I'm going for tracks that would work in a mix, not necessarily which ones should be included.

Ya'll gotta remember that kids might sing these songs out loud while they're in public. So even if the sexual content goes over their heads, the grownups around them will be quite mortified hearing them sing about oral sex, incest and ejaculation! eek

Yes, my point exactly. nod They're young--there's plenty of time to discover the raunchier side of Prince. Prince does have enough to keep them busy and happy for a while until they're a little more mature. Let's face it--there are some lyrics that make ME blush at 35! lol

You all have been wonderful to help with this, though! I'll get Vol. 2 published for anyone who wants to make their own.

Lovin' the .org! hug

Yes--a lot of shit. confused I'm a fifth grade teacher--believe me, I know. But every kid is different. . .I kinda like my 8 year old a little less worldly, but it's only a matter of time. There is a fine line between shielding them so much they have no cultural reference, and exposing them to more than they need to be. But there IS a line, IMO. smile Parenting isn't for cowards! lol lol

Yep, don't see a problem with those for many who are 6/7+. In the end though, it's a judgement call. We're not talking Sister or Head here.

eek uhm ... so u're saying that .. that top list of songs up there you put are better to give to kids... than "I Wish You Heaven" ? whofarted
and also.. to all u'z .. putting 'Raspberry Beret'.. that's not really a wise song either for kids... it's still sex based .. especially the bridge of the song.. whistle *rain sounds so cool, when it hits the barn of a roof.. horses wonder who u r* .. kids will ask.. 'what is he saying?'.. and then it will have to be explained.. he's talking about his 1st sexual experience

My two-year-old loves the funky stuff, normally the title tracks:

3121, Musicology, TRC (!!!!), and
Eye know + Alphabet Street
Come (!!! - I wouldn't put that on your mix though)

P's albums usually start with a rump-shaker which little kids love.
"We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

"That's becuase we're soulless auttomatons"

My 10 year old daughter loves Delerious - it makes her laugh. As far as other tracks go, she owns Musicology, has a mix of old stuff that I put together for her (as a result of having to remove my purple rain CD after hearing Darling Nikki being played...), NEWS, the full Edit version of Emancipation (I was thrilled when I found that!), she loves most of the extended Rave album...

She was thrilled to bits when she found out she would be given her very own album when we go see P in London... but she doesn't want to part with her ticket!!

Don't forget, children are innocent in the most - they just don't get certain lyrics, they don't understand them and thankfully it just goes over their heads... Usually..., but then I check what my 10 year old listens to, so maybe I'm being a bit hypocritical by saying that!!

I think that's important to remember - if something is alluded to in a song, a lot of kids won't work it out. Man, it was years before I actually 'listened' to the lyrics in Raspberry Beret and Little Red Corvette (which is another song that kids love).

good point.

If I hadn't watched "The 100 greatest songs of the 80's" series on VH1, I wouldn't have known what "Little Red Corvette" was REALLY about. Granted, I saw it only months b4 I officially got into Prince. But I'm glad that I learned that right away. And actually, I heard that and immediately accepted it w/o a 2nd thought. I let Prince get away with just about everything cuz he's a musical genius and should feel free to do w/e he pleases.

I bet if you played Gett Off and I Wish U Heaven to 10 kids under 10 years old, 8 out of 10 would prefer Gett Off.

And if you can't play songs to kids that refer to sex in some way (and in Raspberry Beret, it's not lyrically obvious to youngsters), then that's A LOT of popular music you can't listen to.
