maybe he hasn't settled the actual production/distribution details yet, so is holding back a bit?? I saw somewhere reference to the fact that Universal had no info on a new release.

Well, really, we don't even know if he'll use Universal again and it's quite possible that Universal and even Prince don't know that yet, either. lol

We know the perfume is being released 7-7-07. Assuming there's a finished album it could be released anytime between then and the start of the London dates OR the Londoners could actually get it first and we won't see it retailed in stores until after the fact.

Ooops, update. Prince's MySpace page set up by Universal has been closed... I'd say that might indicate that they're not handling any new album. lol

well he only had a one album deal with them, remember? Prince and "contract" don't go together, so I'm betting he's doing this independently.

My guess is that it's called Planet Earth or Earth and has various musical styles from all over the world - he was in panama a couple of years back.

The page was not run by Universal. It belongs to Prince. The new album will be an independent kind of thing.

I haven't heard Prince call it "my new album". The press is wrong about things all the time. They have no problem calling 3121 his "new album". And I could see some promotional company he hired also making the same mistake. I hope it is a new album, but it certainly could be 3121.
[Edited 5/9/07 12:38pm]

have you checked his own website? In print, it clearly states "Ticket Price includes Prince's NEW CD!"

And I didn't capitalize the NEW for emphasis, that is how it is posted on his website.

The problem with that logic is that he hasn't officially announced any cd newer than 3121 on that site.

So if I got this right everyone who has bought tickets will get the album?
It would be strange if it were 3121 as it's been over a year since the release and the tour is called the Earth Tour, not 3121. So my guess is that this means a brand new cd we soon will know more about.

If it's 3121 there could be plenty of frisbee action in that arena! I'm convinced it will be new though, there's still plenty of time between now and the shows and he's definately due an album.
RIP sad

Haystack

"...It's direct marketing and I don't have to be in the speculation business of the record industry, which is going through a lot of tumultuous times right now," he said when asked why he was giving the album away essentially for free.'

If the CD to be given away with the O2 concerts was 3121, why would he say this given that 3121 has already been released and is still being distributed by a major and would therefore render his comment meaningless?

No, it wouldn't at all with this specific comment, actually... he could be very disappointed with how Universal handled 3121 so decided to do something with it himself. For all we know, Universal had a 12 month contract on it, etc... Having Rave Un2 released by a major didn't stop him from essentially releasing a remix of it direct. Sure, it could be talk about a new album but at this point we are ALL in the speculation business.

Blimey, this thread veered off course pretty quickly, didn't it? biggrin

I'll eat my proverbial hat if it's 3121 - what's the point in handing out a CD that most people will have, especially when they thought they were getting a new album, for all the reasons already mentioned?

As for what it'll sound like - for me I thought Musicology was going to be great from the moment I heard the teaser riff on the website - but in the end was a bit dissapointed. 3121 on the other hand I thought was the best album I'd heard by Prince in at least a decade, but still not quite there.

So I'd love it to continue that ascendency, with more of that Prince'y funk sound, a couple of killer tunes that he can probably knock out ten a penny if he wanted to, and some stuff as out of nowhere awesome as tracks like Kiss and Sign o the Times were.

The lyric on that Earth poster put me in mind of SOTT in fact.

But basically, having really rejuvinated himself with the last couple of albums, I'd love it if this one, especially timed with these shows, was an absolute killer album that would really stand up against his absolute best work.

So not much then!
