"The Continental" My God... I'm listening to it right now-- you guys, it might not seem deep, or even creative, but is this song not jammin'? Am I a dork? (please don't answer that... I know, I know )
What are your thoughts on this? The meshed ending of a soon-to-be-its-own song? GO ON! YEAH! And I apologize because I know this isn't the first time it's been discussed... ___ . Oh shit, my hat done fell off

This was a record Prince clearly thought was hit material because snippets of it were included on all the early promo stuff. Seems like he stuck with Sexy MF, My Name Is Prince, 7 and The Morning Papers instead though.

"The Continental" is one of my favorites on Symbol, which is one of my favorite albums of his. It's great!

How U wanna B done? Love this jam!! Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

The Continental is one of only 3 or 4 decent songs on the Symbol album. It jams, it rocks and it's sexy. Why the hell he didn't perform it beyond the Act1 tour i don't know.

I love this cd. It was the last Prince cd before everything went kablooey with Warner Bros. Great improvement after Diamonds & Pearls. Really restored my faith in Prince's music.

I've always liked this song a lot, imo it was one of the stand out tracks on 0(+>. I've always hoped that this would've been a single with a cool mix or extended version, imagine what a kick of single this would've been 4 the album, it would most certainly have been a top 10 hit!! But anyways I'm dwelling on the past that not was...

I agree, it's a gr8 song. I wish he would have put it out as a single instead of "7" which i consider one of the weakest songs on the album.
I totally love D&P. I can't understand why so many fans dislike it. I even like Jughead, it's so funny. But then again taste varies from people to people. NPG: "Prince - get on the mike" Prince: "U don't want me on the mike" I'll have another glass of you.
this time on the rocks. | |

NPG: "Prince - get on the mike" Prince: "U don't want me on the mike" I absolutely love D&P also,i mena beside a couple of trax like "Push" & "walk dont walk" that album is so slammin,& any LP with my jam GETT OFF on it only deserves praise imo. Continental was my 1st fave when i bought a couple of years ago, with Sezy MF & My name is Prince,Mornig Papers is so beautiful,so underrated. So is Continental, altho i usually skip 2 the next track on or my mix cd after the the break down with Carmen's lil' rap...if it were Mayte speaking it i would keep it goin.It is so rockin & sexy,10/10 4 this jam!! ***************************************************************************************

My thoughts exactly! 'Love Symbol' is the last Prince CD that I liked all the way through. It was also the last CD he did before the "crazy years" of name changes and record company wars.'Love Symbol' features everything I love about Prince and then some.

Yea! When I heard that song I was sure it would be a single. Besides 7, it's my favorite on that album!!!

When I bought the album it had a sticker saying "includes My Name Is Prince, Sexy MF, 7 and The Continental", so I'm guessing it was planned as a single at some point.
I loved the song and was disappointed when it wasn't a single. Probably the first time I thought I knew better than a record company... Unfortunately Kirky J's B-Sides Mix and the CB remix Tell Me How U Wanna B Done have put me off this song altogether, and I don't know when I last listened to the original.

btw, is 'The Continental' a sexual position, or a name to describe Prince, or what?

hmmm
i have 2 disagree with all of u. the continental IMO is Prince on cruise control as with most of the album (with the exception of 7 and love 2 the 9's). WB were pressurising 4 big sales so he delivered an album of bog standard funk jams and OK ballads. I'm not saying the album is rubbish. Just no where near the dizzy heights of SOTT, LoveSexy, Rainbow Children etc. IMO Diamonds and Pearls is more of an original concept than the album (even though the band are tighter on ). A lot on Symbol is a re-hash of D & P. The Max follows the EXACT same pattern as GETT Off with Tony's bits in the same tempo and place as '21 postions' etc. As 4 The Continental 2 these ears it is a b-side track and a weak 1 at that if u compare it 2 the likes of Shockadelica, She's Always... etc. ----------
AND I GOTTA ALOTTA BUTTA 2 GO!

Having said that, I also consider it the 1st CD of a triple-album (, Come and TGE). Go figure...

Bust as a whole, the symbol album is a great listen! highlight 4 me is Love 2 the 9s. Back then I didn't like The Morning Papers as much as I do now.. it has a classic Prince-vibe to it- nice guitar solo.

The Continental was going to be a single at one point.
(after 7). There were a load of remixes done for it, of which only 2 have surfaced (Tell me how U Wanna B done on Crystal Ball, & another one circulating on bootleg). There's also a video for it featuring Carmen Electra (slightly different to the one on 3 Chains O Gold)

I loved the song and was disappointed when it wasn't a single. Probably the first time I thought I knew better than a record company... I was also disappointed that "The Continental" wasn't released as a single.I think it would have been a huge hit, with a kickass video all over MTV.I also think "And God Created Woman" was a better single choice than "The Morning Papers".

I've down almost the same thing except I considered Come, TGE & Exodus as a triple set.
