Prince. Michael J and J. Brown video

I finally got a hold of the infamous dance off between the legend and soon to be's. It's interesting to see Michael 'insist' that James Brown bring Prince onstage. Of course Prince stole the stage, but he seemed alittle unsure of what to do. This video along with his American Bandstand appearence for the Prince album, both show how far he's come as a performer and how shy he was as a person. Oh, and man was he cocky and brash. Gotta' love it.

Or how about a trade for a copy of the video? I have a lot of things you may be interested in. Just hit me with an org note.

More observations of that appearance...

When Prince borrowed a guitar, the strap was too long. He didn't seem very comfortable using it. I think he threw the pick away and just started to get all sexy with it, Prince style. That was really funky and cool, that's when you saw the difference in Prince and MJ. You just had to say "Prince is bad!"!

I love the part where he takes over the band and starts asking for hits!

And the outfit, same one he used for the First Avenue Benefit show. So the date has got to be somewhere in 1983.

Overall he seemed very uncomfortable, he was fussing with his shirt, the pilar almost fell on him or people, the guitar was getting on his nerves!

The entrance was great though! Piggy back on Chick!

Also, if you notice James and MJ, in the background, it's as if James Brown is ignoring Prince and talking to MJ and his bandmates. James back is toward Prince as the crowd goes crazy while prince is screaming and getting all funky!

My questions are, why was this filmed, the whole show? Was if for TV? The version I have has a counter at the bottom. Big numbers. What was Prince doing there? Maybe just enjoying James' show.

Can I pleae have some of that LSD or crack yall are partaking in? It must be some good shit because Prince is NOT in top, nor rare form in this performance. It shows him being under the influence and quite unsure of himself and basically blowing it..impromptu or not, he came off very very badly. Plus knocking down the lightpost on people, and the capper..he took off his jacket and left without it, but James picked it up and went to the edge of the stage to give it back to Prince as if sayin "Hey man! U left yo jacket up heah! Come get this shit". All of these embarassing shenanegins is what makes this performance surreal and a classic.

I have just returned from watching this all over again.

Interestingly, even though they are both onstage with JB and his backing band, there is NEVER a single frame of this footage actually showing both Prince and Michael Jackson at the same time! Weird...

Good historical piece of footage, though!

Yes I got it from Kaza. It was great to see him so unpolished. But did you notice MJ disappeared shortly after Prince took the stage, and that JB missed the microphone split because his back was turned. Oh, yeah how about how sharp JB's band was to start to follow Princes cues to the audience.

You should also check out the American Bandstand performance. His axe strap breaks at the beginning os 'Why you wanna treat me so bad'and he has to whisper in Dez's ear to take the solo. Damn, that is a banging solo, I know he was pissed.

The entrance was great though! Piggy back on Chick!

You making our point. It was a classic. When's the last time you ever heard of Prince screwing up on stage. He's a very disiplined person in public. It was a real treat to see him unsure. And I don't care what you say. He took over and gave a glimps of the rare talent he is. He was unpolished but still commanded the stage. Remember the bad boy thing was his thing back then.

When I watch this, it appears as if Prince is crying as I'm guessing he's overwhelmed by it all.

This may explain why he makes a few mistakes.

However, maybe I'm wrong and talking sh*t. wink

This simply wasnt his crowd etc...they were there for James and this was before the deluge of The Rain. Before it became cool for those idiots in the audience to like Prince which would happen a little more than a year later. If Prince is crying its because he threw his glove in the audience and someone threw it back at him. he is also quite drunk...once he was trying to get Vanity to drink some red concotion at a post Grammy party.

The first time I watched this video clip I was Like What? You see I could tell Prince was definitely nervous and ill prepared for this performance. It almost seemed like the guitar he was using didn't work and also when he went to do his split with the microphone he was sorta off. Something was wrong with this performance. Maybe he was drunk who knows ,I wasn't there;however I still enjoy watching this clip and it is surely a Classic as is American Bandstand.

You know this is why I never report on interesting stuff on the .org. I agreed with you that he wasn't on point, he was raw, shy, caught off gaurd, intimidated...but you still insist on talking down to me with the insulting drug talk. Why? I have an opinion and just posted it to incourage meaningful conversation. Not insults. As to the 'command shit' comment. Good or bad he did. When he gestured on the two, the crowd AND THE BAND took his lead (Ugggh, his command). If he didn't COMMAND attention, they would have never responded. Clearly not his best, but since I've never heard of you on stage doing better I must give it some merit, especially considering the undeniable talent he has grown into.

Responsible reply invited.

eye 'm with you Drakie. First of all we could see Prince wasn't what we now know him to be onstage back then. it definitely wasn't as bad as some people have made it out to be and eye didn't cringe as much as I thought. He definitely did show some hint of stardom and acknowledging that fact doesn't make you a crackhead!

I'm not getting on you BluePrince or being all "collector elitist", but it's sad that you have to find or discover this stuff on Kazaa or WinMX.

I'm so, so glad the internet wasn't around (in this form anyway) back when I found these tapes.

That made it all exciting. The undergroundness of it all. That you actually had to hunt around for the stuff in small record stores, or through friends and other fans...

Oh well, you'll dig it when you find it.
