Shockadelica and Lovesexy
It's true though. I forget how I felt about those things originally. I adored them from first listen. The actual problem was making excuses to myself about why I liked something so strange. HE'S COMING AGAIN

My WTF songs/albums fall are what i characterize as "unlistenable" (some more so than others), but here goes
Jughead The Flow (actually anything Tony M. is on except Live 4 Love) Push Graffiti Bridge (ruins an underrated album) P. Control (i understand the concept; awful chorus) 3121 (the song) Chaos & Disorder (the album; certain songs have grown on me tho) Emancipation (except for about 4 songs; sad for three discs) 200 Balloons (should be deleted from the B-Sides CD) NPG Remix of Cream (ruins Disc 2 on Ultimate) several songs on Crystal Ball (i just got it, so i'll refrain for now)

My top 3 of WTF songs:
Lovesexy (the title track): I mean, this song is 'all over the place', it goes from electrofunk to gospellike chants, from psychedelic guitarsoloing to wind up and slowed down voices, from big band jazz to swelling (synthetic strings). When i first heard it my mind was blown away, because of the sheer energy of the song and the stylistic richness, i also had some trouble trying to keep in touch with the main 'groove'. After some listens i recognised the (synth)bassline is the 'red line' of this track, and by focussing on that i could really hold track and appreciate the richeness of this song even more. Its like Prince, George Clinton and Frank Zappa and the Beatles 'teaming up' in rock-heaven... LOL Crystal Ball (the original version with Wendy and Lisa): When i first head this track i had it on a bootleg-tape with a bad sound quality, nonetheless, or maybe even because of that, it made the song sound even more 'creepy' and special then it allready was. I always compare this song to a bit of a nightmarish dream, where you move from one place to another, and where the different situations and scenes don't be seem to be connected at all on a superficial level, but somehow it 'tells me something'. Musically you have Prince going from some kind of eerie funkie worldmusic-pop (the basic motif) trough all kind of different musical styles: jazz-rock like bridges, a part that reminds me of a riff from the band The Police, swelling orchestra, creepy sounding screams, back to that bleak sounding basic motic. While the somewhat cryptic lyrics deal with 'making love at the end of the world': mixing apocalyptic images with sexual obsessions. Its a bit of a shame Prince redid some of the more 'exciting' parts of the music for the version released on the Crystall Ball, but nonetheless this is an unique song that always will have a special place in my memory. Mia Bocca (as sung by Jill Jones) In the past i have praised this songs several times in here, and i think that won't ever change. Jill Jones once said in an interview in 1987 that Prince and her loved the music of classical composer Igor Stravinsky very much, and i think you can hear that influence most clearly: alltough it has a lot of elements of the trademark Minneapolis sound: a minimalistic, brilliantly programmed drummachine, eerie synths and 'cocky' vocals and lyrics, the way this elements are combined with Clare Fishers arrangements and the more complicated structure of the compositon, lift it up to to the status of a brilliant 'electrofunk symphony' It definitely shows the musical growth Prince has went trough since 1984, i mean: starting with an orchestral intro, then the almost acapella vocals of Jill Jones, the way the beat comes in, the way the orchestra meanders around the beat and vocals, the contrast between the 'sleasy' sounding beat and vocals and the more sophisticated orchestrations, the way the music falls 'still' near the end of the song, leaving the listener with only a bleak sounding beat and Jill Jones vocals, the surprising, uplifting end with the trumpetsolo and the orchestra in full swing: THAT is in essence the difference between the Prince from 1981 - 1984, a Prince learning to create original, energetic funkrock and the Prince between 1985 - 1988, a Prince evolving further, understanding the mastership of 'arranging' and 'orchestrating' music.

peach!!!!! Sexy MF, I think its called Truth from Crystal ball (an acoustic song) the breakdown in the middle was totally unexpected and embarassing.
The screaming at the end of the beautiful ones sucks too

Oh lawd, where do I even start.
I love Prince. I think he's a true genius. But part of being so diverse and such a genius is some very very odd misfires. The Arms of Orion -- It was as if my ears developed a scorching case of herpes while listening to it, the song was just that painful. COME (The Entire Album) - Though the album has since grown on me and I enjoy it for the most part, when I first heard it I was convinced I was listening to Prince doing covers or something. In the title track I was thinking is Prince channeling "Snow, the candian rapper?" And the rest of the abulm was so-so. It's not that COME is a "bad" album--it's just that I though the symbol album was brilliant. I was expecting something equally messy in scope. Come was much more slick, and toned down. Emancipation - Again, an album I've grown to very much like (I've probably listenned to Emancipation more in the last 2 years than Musicology or 3121 combined). But I was expecting 3 hours of The Gold Experience I was like then then then The Rainbow Children - Musically it's on par with LoveSexy. But the themes , and the stupid Darth Vader narration, and the extreme down tempo feel to the album made it hard to listen to. I never listen to it all the way through now, if ever. SISTER - Let's Pretend We're married - The electronic symbol, the extreme repetitive nature to the song, and that damned "Oweee sha sha kookoo yeah" bullshit just ruined it for me. Diamonds & Pearls - Billed as the new Purple Rain when it was released, I was expecting something that would blow me away. Hell, even Patty Labelle said D&P was one of her favorite albums. When I listenned to it initially I was like , then . I like a few tracks from it though, but in all honestly, I like Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic more than D&P.

Protege said: Alphabet St. made me do that as well, I have to say. Since then it has grown on me a little but I've realized the thing that annoys me so much is probably Cat rapping, not so much the song. The song itself has a great and unique beat and isn't bad (to me) at all. But the rapping gets on my nerves.
If I could just get a version with the rap I'd be fine. THANK YOU!!! I like the Maxi single for Alphabet Street, but everytime I hear the CAT wrap, I want to vomit. It almost completely ruins LoveSexy. Seriously, the Jughead rap doesn't annoy me as much, cause I can at least laugh at that. Damn shame cause I love the Alphabet St. single edit without the rap. Oh wait--I also hate every rendition of the song I've heard live.
