What instrument is this?

That beginning sound that plays in that "up and down" fashion throughout in "She's Always in My Hair". What creates this sound? I've always wondered.
Walking alone in the dark, I see nothing u see
I can be in a park, or flying in the…in the deep sea
I wish u’d hold my hand; then everything could b
There’s nothing strange, we’re not deranged
We only want everyday 2 b a Cosmic Day

Its not an instrument, 1nonly, its an effect. A 'Flanger' in fact. He would have put the drums through an effects processor with a flange effect on it. Thats what creates the up and down sound u hear. hope that helps.

U can hear it in live versions of hot thing on the SOTT tour boots. The hi hat has a flanger effect on it. Thus, creating the up and down sound

And to add to the reply by 3121: the flanger effect is what you get by echoing the original sound with a short delay (milliseconds) and then cycling the delay ever so slightly between two delay times. It is a well known effect for DJs: by spinning two identical records and slightly varying the pitch of the record you get a similar effect.

Excellent. Thank you. I just always wondered. Being that this song is indeed my all time favorite, I just had to know. Again, thank you.
