I just saw part of the Oprah one again...

I was on the edge of tears toward the end. Prince (at the time, prince ) was saying that in 10 years, he was going to have kids crawling all over him.

But his future didn't come out that way... it's 10 years later... it's so sad.

At the time, though, he just looked so happy and enlightened. He seems so different now. That same happiness isn't in his eyes, but he seems happier now than he did in the 80's and early 90's.

I was moved by the O interview at the time, but didn't know then what I know now. Why go ahead with an interview with someone like her if you're not going to be at all honest? I thought it was funny how even O, the queen of interviews, came up confused at certain points. lol "we don't know if they're male or female yet", etc. lol

That 1985 MTV interview was just painfully strange, but I love it anyway. I remember watching that when it aired- had to go to my sister's house since my town didn't even have cable yet- both her and my bf were just like, WTF is wrong with him? lol While I sat with my jaw dropped telling them to shut up.

My favorites? Mojo in 1986 ranks really, really high. And I love the 1985 Rolling Stone interview, by Neil Karlen.

Parts of this interview made me laugh because you can tell that some of the things they talked about either one or the other didn't get... like when she asked if he was this "put together" everyday and he said "oh I'm always clean"...it was like she didn't get it. giggle And when she asked his waist size & he said 27 she said "well isn't that delightful" & he thought she meant his outfit. I took it as she was being sarcastic like "well you have a 27 inch waist, that's just great" because hers isn't. I love that interiew even if a lot of it is strange.

well, as I was saying, I used to love that interview, but find it disturbing now. People want to talk about how happy he seemed, how much in love with Mayte, etc. but the facts of that time period just don't support that.
I wish he'd go back and do a real interview with Oprah now.

That was a strange video. He kept twirling something circular in his hands during the interview.
His response in the word association game to "jewelry" was "Jew".
"Romeo, Romeo, let down your hair"....Wait! it's Rapunzel.

It was ont of his big earrings, guess the one he tossed to Aples at a certain point... wink The interview was done in Paisley Park, as a promo to The NPS album, and can be found on the Beautiful strange video, which also includes the vid for that song and parts of the Cafe de paris gig in London. It is pretty ok.

I saw very few of them and all of them vere recent. I haven´t seen any from the 80´s.
I loved him in Oprah.

People will view things differently no matter what the situation is, especially when they don't have all the information. At the time that I saw this interview I had no idea that his child had passed. He seemed very much in love with Mayte IMO at the time of the interview so that's why many people are fond of it. They've never seen P gush so much. I think because of the information we have now some people are like eek how could he do that? But everyone grieves differently and I can't fault anyone for how they deal with their pain. I still love the interview because it gave me a glimps of PP & how he behaved in his environment... even if it was just an act. wink

My top favorite of all time (that I have even shown non prince fans):

the musicology era one with the hot female newscaster on msnnbc where she tries to get him to sing and play guitar and he turns it sround on her and makes her tear up in the eyes.

Prince has never seemed so cool and wickedly funny in an interview which kept boiling to the point where you could even hear the production crew reacting.

not sure if wickedly-funny = charming though.

I´ve only seen a few pics of that interview, I think you´re talking about the one with the acoustic guitar and that beige colored jacket. What was so special about that interview ? I´m just curiious....from reading your comment, it sounds as if he were a bit mean towards her, making her eyes well up etc.

that's right.

That was a pretty cool one, cuz the two of them know each other (at least I'm sure they do) so it's easy for Prince to relax when he's being interviewed by someone he knows personally.

Yes this was a good one. I don't even remember what they were discussing in the interview but I remember that part. She was like, "I'm a chiken" & he makes the chicken noise. I would have sang loud & off key and didn't give a damn. LOL

It was a big deal when P granted the interview on MTV. MTV promoted it to death for damn near two weeks before they aired it. Me having seen P in concert 6 times already by the time this first aired, I had a pretty good idea on how P was going to be. To be honest, I thought he was going to be less talkative. BUT at the same time, the interview was totally controlled by P. He already knew the questions that were going to be asked cuz it was asked by his own manager/business associate. So he was super prepped and ready. It wasn't, in any real sense of a stretch, a real interview. P was soooo prepared on what to say and HOW he was going to say it and how he was going to look when he said it. That's what u see in that interview. It was designed to make P look as charming and witty as possible. Not saying that he isn't any of those things in a REAL situation. But that MTV interview definately wasn't "real".

Yup. I also got annoyed when she kept saying "You're pretty, really pretty." He's still a man, call him handsome or something other than pretty. At least to his face anyway. lol

I liked the BET interview with Tavis Smiley from 98. It was a really long interview and he even had callers call in asking questions and was giving really good, quick answers.

The Mel B one was nice also. I have these at home so can check on the title since do not remember it offhand.

The Tora Tora interview with the vailed face and Mayte talking for him is always good for laughs tho smile

Yes the Tavis one is a good one. He actually had another one with Tavis that I enjoyed also. They were sitting in chairs rather than on the stools like the first one. I don't know what year that was though.

I really liked the BET Tavis Smiley interview and I also really like the one with Dick Clark on American Bandstand(that had to be 1980 give or take a year).Prince was quite a character even from the beginning and that is why I find him sooo charming.

I'll tell you which interview I thought was the worst! It was that press conference in Spain in 1998. The translator kept cutting him off, and he got really pissed. He finally asked for a show of hands from the people who could understand English. He also seemed very uncomfortable, and looked like he would have rather been anywhere else than in that seat. It was not fun to watch.

I think it is strange to go on that interview... but I am not as driven as Prince is... that is why he is PRINCE and not Skipper Nelson.
I think he didn't want to Oprah prying in those raw feelings... remember Prince is sensitive...what would everyone be glad if he was "honest" and just fell apart on camera??
I personally like the Oprah interview and the Bryant Gumble interview done shortly after .,,, because Prince wasn't all about business, he opened up some of his personal life between him and his wife.
Made him seem more human, instead of superstar... ya know what I mean?
