I have to admit that when I got it on release, I listened to it twice and thought it was SHIT!!!I thought it was SO bad, I preferred New Power Soul(strange but true!)I put it in my collection and never looked at it for 2 months-resigned to the fact that the man I had adored(in a non-sexual way-obv!!!)had lost the plot BIG TIME, and was going to be going thru ANOTHER difficult phase. Then one day I got back in from work, saw it sitting there, gave it another go-and now...I have to admit I was SO wrong. It is a piece of sheer genius, and his most solid, funky, complete work(in my opinion) since 1988.All my friends still think it's Prince being self-indulgent tho-but I havent heard any of them complain when 1+1+1=3 comes on-they LOVE that one!!

Ask yourself this...
Could anyone else do TRC? Pure and utter MASTERPIECE! Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I'm gonna say this:
Personally, I didn't like it. It did nothing for me. BUT I do note that musically it's well produced, the lyrics are intriguing and its a unique, very creative work. Music is information. A lot of musicians work hard on their craft even if some of it comes out sounding mediocre and I appreciate their hard work. Music either speaks to us or it doesn't. Perhaps those that like TRC found something in it that resonated with them and that's cool. However, I will admit that I didn't understand everything that Prince was talking about in it. What I did understand, I didn't like and that's okay too. I still respect him as a musician. I pretty much expect Prince to head into other areas of music as most gifted musicians tend to do as they excel in their art and unfortunately many people fall away because they aren't able to go with him mentally. It is what it is. Personally, I would love to hear Prince drift off into some World Rhythm/New Age music. I just don't like Jazz/Fusion. I had my day with it but very little of it can I listen to for very long. LQ

The Rainbow Children is what it is...a work of art.
All art hits people in different ways at the same time. So everyone isn't going to get that vibe on 1 or 2 listens. Before I first heard it, I thought TRC was gonna be like soft jazz and was not inclined to listen to it right away. But after I listened to it, I was totally amazed how, while it is definitely a different direction for him, it was still Prince expressing himself. Musically, it is one of his most powerful pieces of work in recent years. Then hearing some of the songs on the promo CD just made me appreciate it even more.

Get your headphones on, relax and enjoy.it's so deep and there is so much going on, that's not immediately apparent upon the first few listens. If you can get over the slowed down voice, you'll love it.
