I'm an african-american, and I have to say that in light of this whole Don Imus fiasco, I'm disgusted.

It makes me sick to see the media, and other respectable african americans go after a white man for saying "nappy headed ho's", when Ludacris and Nelly and DMX and Method Man have perpetuated disrespectful lyrics, images, and depictions of black women for YEARS... and our community only displays outrage when a white man says it.

I'm SICK about this whole thing.

The cure starts at HOME! Why can't Al Sharpton go after THEM. It starts there! I'm not justifying what Imus said... but in my opinion... there should not be this B.S. double-standard.

If it wasn't for rappers and the images they display, and even african-american women eating that up... buying these CD, going to these concerts... supporting these disrepectful acts... Imus would have never felt comfortable making such a statement.

But I digress...

Prince has always been about sex... but can you name any songs where Prince said "Ho"... and was flat out disrepectful.

The imagery in Gett Off was an orgy, and Prince has often used images of women scantilly clad... true... but... I don't consider that anywhere near what the hip hop culture displays... or flat out CALLS women.

Lady Cab Driver comes to mind... but that was his own lust.

Your thoughts please? Any disrespectful songs?

clapping thank you! well said! amen!
now listen...I don't even like Imus, but this is america right? we still have free speech in this country or what? I do think what imus said was rude and disrespectful but..big friggin' deal! He should be able to say whatever he wants....people don't have to like it or agree with it.
anyway...
as for Prince....I think on occasion he's said a few comments that weren't completely respectful but..on the whole I think Prince has been respectful of women. For the few occasions where he's said something disrespectful, I think he's more than made up for it in other lyrics where he praises them. biggrin

You have free speech in america as long as it does not effect your ratings or piss off the sponsers. America is all about money.

Once again, he's not "generalizing" or depicting all women as such, but he does call the woman a bitch through the song. Hmmmm...

Yes, because she is spending his money, dating other dudes and driving his car around. If you listen to song he is putting himself down for being stupid enough to go along.

If you take any of Prince's lyrics and stake them against rappers he is no where close to them in being offensive to woman.

In fact some of his songs are really about woman being empowered.

All good points. He makes rapping sound good... except 4 "My Name is Prince"... :shudder: don't get me started on that. Most of mainstream today is rap & hip-hop with lyrics that really don't do anything 4 it... I have my doubts that the music is any good, I lost faith in mainstream a while ago.

I first heard Gett off while watching the video, so that's why I didn't really like the song at first... then again, I wasn't as open to his "sexy" side back then as I am now. I'm crazy about "Gett off" now just because it's familiar territory. I've heard enough rap and somewhat racy lyrics to really enjoy it.

But yeah, P. Control & TMBGITW are 2 songs that speak of him empowering women.
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

I personally don't feel there was even one nappy headed ho on the team so no one should have been offended.

So, if I were to assert that your Mother gave me, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Dick Cheney, and the 3-6 Mafia great BJ's every night for the past week, her denial of my assertion for whatever reason, per se, would preclude her from being offended? hmmm

Hmmm. In the rest of the universe, the falsity of an assertion makes it actionable libel.

well wtf? what I think your saying is if you said my mom gave you and whom ever else a blow job but she never did...should she not be offended that you were saying that?
correct. she should not be offended that some one she's never met is saying something untrue about her. Although I think that borders on slander whereas nappy headed hos...doesn't. I know ...I know..you're gonna say "ho's" isn't slander? and I'm gonna say...no..not to me, in this example.

that is unfortunaly too true. BUT...I don't think it would have effected his ratings if it hadn't gotten blown outta proportion like it did. I personally feel Mr. Imus shoulda just say, sorry if I offended anyone with my rude comment and moved along. I think his over appologies made it worse.

The statement about your Mom -- if untrue -- would be (forget the boderline) outright slanderous. Calling any woman a whore who is not one is equally slanderous.

The only way that a woman called a whore was not the victim of slander would be if the person who called her one could prove it was true.

Anyone who claims not to be offended that horrific lies are told about them makes me wonder what the truth about them might be.

oh please. I think you're trying to offend me with your "makes me wonder what the truth about them might be" comment. Psh! I don't care what you or anyone one else who doesn't know me, thinks about me. I'm not a "whore" why would I be offended if someone called me that? they can not prove it...let them try.
and again..I think "horrific lies are told about them " is an exaggeration of what really happened. it was an off handed supposed to be funny, rude comment made by an out of touch old guy. confused
who cares what he thinks.

The only one time as a woman that I hated something was "when her titties bounced" line from Peach I turn it off or switch it then. Other than that any of his sexual references just make me love him

princes attitude towards women can be taken as disrespectful for the simple fact that in his music women can only be sexual playthings in his music.has prince tried to come off this since he got into the bizness.

I always kinda liked that line... but Krystal... you're right. That's not exactly complimentary.

I mean "super fine" is,... but the "heifer" reference... yeah... you got that!

BUT... lol... he meant it in the sexiest of terms! lol
The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

I watched Aladdin Live yesterday and when he mentioned they wanted to have a dance off he followed that with ...for people who really need the exercise...He caught himself a little but when people (mostly women) joined him on stage some of them fell into the 'more to love' category...I don't think he was trying to offend but some people might say it was insensitive. Cloreen bacon skin kinda makes fun of a fat ugly woman named Cloreen. lol

I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Extralovable" where he said:
"I'm sorry, but I'm just going to have to rape U...now are U going to get into this bed? Or do I have to drag U? Don't make me drag U..." eek

shrug Sorry...someone had to bring it up!

"Love Hurts.
Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.
I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..."

Yeah, but women really don't like to hear the words Bitch and Whore coming out of men's mouths whether it be about one woman or several! Purple rain was filled with so much Violence towards women it was sad, but look how he was raised!
[Edited 4/13/07 8:12am]

I saw an interview Prince did, where the topic of violence in the movie was raised. His response was, he didn't write the script and it was based on fiction.

I don't see where Prince has the generalized bad attitude towards women, such as the rappers sing about.
On the other hand, I bet he plays hardball with any woman he's divorcing. "Bitch! You're not getting another red cent of my hard earned money!" ....now where's my army of attorneys..... lol
