1999/Monday Monday

What do we reckon?

For those that remember; back in 2003, not long after it's $25 relaunch, the powers that be at NPGMC slagged off Ronan Keating for supposedly 'ripping off' the song Purple Rain.

Eventually, the backlash made them close the forums for a time until the fuss died down.

One of the things I thought at the time was that Prince himself must have been 'hugely inspired' by the Mamas and Papas singing 'Monday Monday' when he came up with the synth hook of '1999'. . . And to be honest, the similarity between that synth hook and the baa daa baa daa daa daa of Monday Monday is surely a bit more than just a co-incidence.

Naturally, I'd never dream of insinuating that Prince would ever copy anybody else's work and neither should anybody else.

That said, does anybody else know of any co-incidences where a Prince song has sounded uncannily like something else that has already been out there? And yes, I'm well aware that many other people have also been 'inspired' by Prince songs when releasing their work.

Remember: no accusations of plagarism, please.

Ronan Keating came up with a song (I'm not a fan of his in any way, shape or form, so can't remember the title or anything) and one of the news items on NPGMC at the time made some comment on it, with words to the suggestion of 'Where have we heard this before?'
Now although at a push there were some similarities between his song and the song 'Purple Rain', it was noted by those responding to the suggestion that throughout the history of music, there is and always have been times where one song will sound somewhat like another song and nobody should directly accuse or hint at plagarism without just cause. And it was also annoying that the first hint of negativity at the Club had come officially from the Club itself, rather than one of its members. The fact that the forums shut down for a time immediately after the controversy kind of proved that the Club had waded in out of its depth. And all it did was encourage those who found the hint of plagarism to be somewhat out of order to point out the times where Prince himself had created music that sounded very, very similar to stuff that was already out there.

Basically, I like to think that NPGMC learnt that people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Buzzcocks "Are Everything" from 1981 = "Raspberry Beret" from 1985.

Yes, that Journey song "Faithfully" that we discussed not too long ago and then of course "White Horse" by Laid Back , which sounds a lot like Erotic City but supposedly came out before Erotic City.

Laid Back´s original videoclip to "White Horse" is no longer on youtube but here´s some sort of amateur video that uses a version of Laid Back´s "White Horse":

Many people think that Prince borrowed a few ideas from this song but maybe, just maybe those guys from Laid Back had already heard Erotic City way before it came out and borrowed from Prince and not the other way around...as far as I remember , there was some sort of connection between them, there was this Prince maxi of When Doves Cry with a Laid Back song on the b-side, at least that´s what some orger said on that thread we had about this song.
Anyway, Erotic City sounds way better than the Laid back song anyway
lol .

lol I´ve just checked out the Mamas and Papas song Monday Monday....well, it is a bit of a stretch to think he borrowed from that song but I do get your point.

Prince just takes anything he hears to another level I guess.
