Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton

These are the best guitarists ever in R&R history. So what I would like you to do is arrange these artist in numbers on who you think is the greatest to the least greatest. 1 of course being the best. Here's my order:
1. Prince
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. Eddie Van Halen
4. Stevie Ray Vaughn
5. Eric Clapton
Peace and be wild!

1) Jimi Hendrix
2) Eddie Van Halen
3) Stevie Ray Vaughan
4) Prince
5) David Gilmour or Brian May

Historically, Jimi and Eddie have had the biggest impact on electric, rock guitar...so I put them first (I grew up more on Eddie, but Jimi had a bigger impact). I could alternate with Stevie and Prince...right now I'm in a southern fried type of mood.

I find Eric Clapton damn boring! So I offered up a couple of expressive players with the tasty guitar chops. I like Gilmour and May's playing equally. They both have such beautiful guitar tones complimenting some of the tastiest playing I've ever heard.

Jimmy Nolen invented funk guitar, so i guess he should be considered one of the most influential.
SRV? what did he do that Hendrix didn't 20 years before him?

I definitely agree with you about Jimmy Nolen. But SRV is pretty influential. People have been trying to copy his sound all over the place.

These 5 cats on THIS list, in my opinion, aren't the 5 best in history of rock. I assume you're talking the top 5 in history? Hell nah. Hendrix and VH, yeah, should be in the top 5, with Jimi being numero uno. But the others, in the the top 5?....nah.

No disrespect to any of the others you listed, but Jimi was THE MAN. I'd also have to add Eddie Hazel. If you never heard him, do a search on YouTube. Ain't a player on that list could do what Jimi did in Monterey, at the Monterey Jazz Festival in '66, I think that's when it was?

I do think Prince is worthy of the company of these other great guitarist names.

My Question is this: If you were to include Prince on a website dedicated to any other of these talents, would his mention get heckled and laughed at?

Can't imagine a Van Halen fan (other than myself) thinking Prince should be in the same talent bracket as a guitarist as Eddie.

There may be a few who know of Prince's talents, but I can imagine the wide majority would snicker. (though more may take P serious after the Super Bowl exposure)

Without thinking about this too long, if I had to pick just 5 guitarist that had a Rock sound...

Jimi Hendrix
Allan Holdsworth
Jeff Beck
Eddie Van Halen
Carlos Santana

...and were influential to the Rock Guitar vocabulary.

I like Prince as an artist, but he's not bringing anything unique to the Rock Guitar party.

Wrong. He is the most versatile of them all and by far. I'm not saying he is the best but the best at playing any style, damn sure.

Not unique... but Prince did help to further bring rock guitar into funk... but I think Eddie Hazel deserves the credit for starting that.
