Copyright infrigement on Youtube

I posted a video of myself playing (improvising most of it) the guitar solo of purple rain over a backing track on youtube, Then my video was removed because of copyright infrigement. Can someone explain to me why it happened? It was done by Universal Music. What Universal has to do with a guy playing some guitar?

I suspect its is because of the backign track i used. Not because of the licks i was playing. Can someone explain why something like it could happen? IT was just random licks. I am not very aware of how this things works, can someone enlighten me?

I dunno. Prince's people don't take it lightly when someone puts any form of his music on that site...

The overall system, I think, is whack because they took off anything that's copyrighted and that includes songs, no matter how they're done or who does them.
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

This copyright nazism is really getting out of hand. If people aren't getting profit, they are not harming the artist...and also they are being the best source of advertisement there is.

It seems the music industry cant pass over the fact that they will never earn as much money as before. At least not in selling albums and singles. Not while they see that free music on the internet as an evil thing that it is not, and still, it cannot be stoped. So its like they are doing paranoid palliative actions that dont affect their income by any means.

With those actions, they are alienating the fans. It's really fucked up this entire situation

coolcat

While old disabled grannies get sued for accidentally downloading music illegally, Timbaland gets away with making ringtones out of other people's music. shrug

You're probably correct.

If you perform someone else's composition or broadcast someone else's recording, it's quite possible that the relevant rights holders will be entitled to payment.

As Universal administer Prince's publishing rights, they too have a financial stake in ensuring such monies are collected or, where there is no intention of people paying money over, demanding that further infringement ceases.
