ha, no way.
I've been on a hot Prince streak for the past 6 weeks as an up and coming fan. And I'm enjoying every minute of it. He put Jesse McCartney, the guy I looked up to and admired for the past five years I've been a fan of his, on a pedestal... and I sorta forgot about him. Sure he's fun to listen to, but he's no where near Prince in terms of being a songwriter... JMac doesn't play an instrument, but he deserve a little credit cuz he co-wrote all but one of his songs on his latest album. But Prince is in a class by himself. I doubt anyone could replace him that now I'm in so deep. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

I've heard a handful of his songs, Thriller, Billy Jean, Dirty Diana (saw the video, actually, bored me to death), and there's one other i dont know the name of. I like the ones in bold, but never really jumped on the bandwagon. I could care less at this point, musically, he went out with the 80's. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. In 1985, if Rick James had still been throwing down as hard as he previously had, he would have been Prince's replacement. Instead, he comes out with a weak ass album like "Glow".
Also, if Shitney Houston had not killed funk, I'm sure there would have been lots of funk newcomers that would have replaced Prince in the late 1980s. Andy is a four letter word.

Prince and Michael were neck to neck for me around 1984 or so until Michael got lazy in the studio and Prince kept churning out so much music. That's the exact reason why I stopped being so heavy into Michael Jackson. The "King of Pop" thing is what started with me being less of a fan but Prince came and swooped me up with another album. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Hey Kurtis
Nobody has ever replaced Prince in my life but i do go through moods as to what music i listen to. I'll go through my fav's every no and then, U2, Queen, The Police etc but i always go full circle and return to Prince again. If truth be told Prince took over Queen, even more so when Freddie M died. Reality is an illusion

Beck... To me he is the white Prince... Prince is more talented, but Beck is now more creative, innovative, and artistic than Prince. Prince, however will always be number 1 to me though because of his talented gifts....
55%-Prince 45%-Beck . | |

Bah...no he's not. When Beck creates the template for a whole generation of music then maybe. Until then Baby, that was much too fast... 1958-2016

The Grateful Dead and Ani Difranco both held the number one spot for extended periods between 90-96. I loved Graffitti Bridge but after that my music environment was dominated by the Dead and then in 94 by Difranco. I still listened to a lot of Prince but during that period it was far less than at any time previous since becoming a fan in '83. The Come album returned me full force to Prince.
The Dead and Difranco still hold a tie for second with Phish, Widespread Panic, Dylan, Hednrix, and the Beatles fighting for the next 5 spots. Right now I am big on Fall Out Boy. Under the Cork was excellent. The new one is good too. It is missing the raw energy of Cork but has much better production and overall artistry (songwriting, playing, etc...)

No I like other folks, but no one's the total package quite like Prince same with me. Sure, I still listen to music by other people, but it's usually a temporary stint. I don't get in as deep with other singers. I haven't devoted much time to others as I have to Prince in the past 7 weeks I've been in this "world". had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. Well, Prince isnt my favourite singer, when it comes to his vocals, that honour goes to Van Morrison.
Prince was my first real musical hero, i was getting a big fan of him while i was in my teens, and i was taking distance to his music after the Gold Experience, because the quality of his output was declining. But in the end that wasnt a problem, i gave me space to discover all other kind of artists. I consider Prince my favourite all-round musician, because of his versality, his creativity and musicality in general, especially in the period 1981 - 1988. But next to that my favourite singer is, as i said, Van Morrison, my favourite female musician is Bjërk, my favourite band is REM, i also really dig Powerpop (Matthew Sweet and Teenage Fanclub being my favourites), my favourite singer-songwriter type of musician is Lyle Lovett, My favorite instrumentalist is Miles Davis and i also love countryrock (The Jayhawks) a lot, and i adore female artists singing celtic / irish music (Susan McKeown, Sandy Denny, June Tabor).

He's become my favorite musician... the word "singer" doesn't quite cover everything, so I never refer to him as a singer. When talking about singers, though, Jesse McCartney is still my favorite, only because I kinda feel like we grew up together. We're only a year apart in age and I've been a fan of his for 5 years. In the all-around "competition" of musicians, Prince still has the gold in my book for all of the reasons you mentioned. I don't quite see the creative decline that other fans who've been with him longer see... but I like to think that his style just changed and matured due to the wisdom he gained thru his life experiences. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. Prince has never been replaced. He has always been my number one. But when it took his extended "break" (that's what I like to call it) in between albums than I did listen to others more often. But he IS and ALWAYS will be my number 1. DIRTYMIND

Well, i disagree with you on the part of 'creative decline'.
Especially in the period 1996 - 2003 i had a 'hard time' taking Prince serious as a musician i still had faith in, because he was underachieving for me. But what keeps me interested in him, is that he still has the potential to be the greatest all round pop musician on earth, and even on his most weakest albums, there were most of the time a number of songs that were proof to me that when he is good (not great, but good...) he is better then lets say 90 percent of the other musicians. But, what is also important to me, as a music lover, that realise that Princes music doesnt offer everything i look for in music. I mean: when i long for a sense of mystery and melancholy and for poetic lyrics i listen to REM, because Princes music doesn't offer me that. And when i long for the perfect popsong draped in golden riffs i listen to Matthew Sweet or Teenage Fanclub, because Prince isnt the master in that kind of songs.
