The Family On CD

I met a Prince fan at 3121 on 3/24 and we were talking about Prince cover songs. I just casually mentioned that I really didn't like Sinade O'Connor's cover of 'Nothing Compares To You', I just think that The Family's version was just so much better. She screamed at the top of her lungs and couldn't believe that I knew about The Family. We had a wonderful conversation about one of the most over looked albums and bands of all times. Well, that got me thinking...let's start a serious campaign to bring back The Family's album on CD or ITunes. What do you think? Also, I here The Family is coming back, so this might not be necessary...but to be on the safe side, let's start the campaign any way.

Co-sign that. I really enjoyed that album, especially their and Prince's version of "Nothing Compares to You.''
I'd be thrilled if Prince would let us hear his original demo version - his vocals, etc., and not the version on "The Hits'' collection with the wonderful Rosie Gaines (I love that version, too, the LIVE feel). I have the impression that Paul Peterson stuck to the version Prince played for them, but hearing the author's voice would be cool.
Just dreamin' I know, but a man can dream!

Forget about Nothing Compares To U, Screams of Passion is such a classic song. Love that one til death. The rest of the album is quite good in my opinion

A Prince fan couldn't believe another Prince fan knew about The Family? What planet is she on? It's pretty damn common knowledge. I've even met people who only have a passing interest in Prince who know about sheila e and the family and the time.

It came out in the UK on CD around the time of the Sinead hit but I didn't bother getting it (I had it on vinyl) but I recently got a copy on ebay. My favourite Prince spin off project.

It's not that unusual, the album wasn't a big hit when it came out. During that period Prince was putting out a lot of stuff (pissed off Warner Bros too.) and some people slept on this one. I know some 'fans' that were surprised when I told them the Sinade O'Connor version of Nothing Compares To You was a remake back when she was blowing up the charts. Fans come in all stripes, in fact she won tickets on the radio to 3121 (great for her, really) but I on the other hand purchased tickets three time (took my brother twice) and drove up from Phoenix every time. My love affair with Prince started with Prince's first record Soft and Wet, it came out when I was about 14 and I haven't taken my eyes/ears off of him since. We all know that most of Prince's fan base jumped on board during Purple Rain but the 'hardcore' fans (like us) are a different/special breed.

I have it on cassette and vinyl, and I own the single for "Screams of Passion (extended)".

The Family is my favorite Prince satellite project.

But for the life of me, I cannot track down a legit CD copy.

I love them so much.

They could do a "limited edition" if sales have low expectations. shrug

Hip-o-select releases these all the time: albums that are of certain interest to people, like out-of-print or never-in-print Motown albums.

Not a bootleg, just pretty crazy prices. I found the Black Album cassette from 1994 over there for $2.99 and THAT was definitely real

I thought 'The Family' album was never officialy released on CD.

But i think it should be any moment.

For me its the 'missing link' between the minneapolis sound from Prince and the Time in the period 1982 - 1984 and the jazzy / semi-classical soundexperiments on 'Parade' and also the debut album from Jill Jones (released in 1987).

Some top notch tracks on that album. Tracks that Prince should have released by himselve in my opinion:
- High Fashion
- Mutiny
- Screams of Passion
- Nothing compares to you
- Desire

By the way,

The screams of Passion still sounds as fresh and creative as the day of its release.

I recently saw it on 'a site the moderators here don't want to be named in here', and it really is a timeless piece of 'baroque funk-pop'

I would expect the Black Album to be seen at those prices, especially on cassette. But the Family? If he's retailing it for $8 then he only paid $4 max for it, which means the stockist he got it from is selling pirates. I got a japanese original cd pressing about 10 years ago and it cost me a good $80 US. And that was cheap!

Then again, I did buy a copy of Vanity 6 on cd at a cd fair for $8. It was original. I sold it the next day to a collector for $130! The dude selling it just had no idea what he had.

I didn't dislike Sinead's version but I LOVE The Family's version. I think ST. PAUL has such a beautiful voice.

Heads up... if any of you saw this $99.97 copy on Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Fam...B000091NOB

BEWARE - IT IS A VINYL COPY THAT THE LINKED SELLER HAS, NOT AN AUDIO CD

"The album is on vinyl sorry for the confusion." is what the seller told me.

sorry to disagree here, but there are some hole in the wall record/second hand stores that get this stuff and don't know what the hell they have in their hands.
i for one have found some really nice finds going through these shops.

so to say that it had to be fake just because it was found in a store is totally inacurate.
