TMBGITW is the most perfect ,mass appeal love song P ever wrote.

listening to it on Radio 1 [jesus!!] right now and forgot just how gorgeous and popular it was. It is better than Nothing compare 2u as it celebrates love. It's just wow. Props though to David Z [I think] who arranged and virtually produced the track [correct me if i'm wrong?]

I must be honest, I never really liked the song, it kinda left me unmoved. But it definately had mass appeal.

I personally disagree funkyhead - this song led me to lose interest in Prince for a few years. But then, I had a summer job in a warehouse at the time that had Radio 1 on all day, and they caned that song all day long. I got sick of it very quickly...

it was galling to me that it was P's first UK number one when it just seemed sooo bland, with a twee video in tow. THIS was the guy who wrote "If I was Ur Girlfriend"?...

That's what got to me. Not to be overdramatic but after having spent years loving track after track this went to number one and then people thought that this was a good example of his music. confused

It's certainly his most famous mainstream ballad, but not necessarily his best ballad ever, I prefer Adore or Purple Rain.

When i look at the succes of TMBGITW (it is probably hist best selling single ever in Europe) i agree with the OP.

As a musiclover, i consider it one of the most uninteresting Prince songs, a sugary ballad, commercial, but not too slick, obviously aimed at scoring a 'hit'
, alltough it isnt bad, personally it leaves me cold when i hear it on the radio.

I agree that it went mainstream big time, for me it was surreal to hear my 2 older sisters, who are in no way shape or form Prince fans, sing that song!!
Blew me away..

yeah, i have to agree with that. it's a nice enough song but as far as
his ballads go, it's one of the least appealing to me. i don't like it
all that much.

some of the remixes on the Beautiful Experience are cool tough.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

"Adore" and "Nothing Compares to U" are the best, hands down. When "The Most Beautiful Girl..." came out I had just given birth to my daughter and would sing it to her all the time, so the song has a special place in my heart. But from purely an objective point of view, "Adore" and "Nothing Compares to U" are the most awesome love songs Prince has ever done.

I think its a good pop tune and a nice song to sing to a woman. I like how he lowers his tone at the end when he breaks it down. "COULD U BE!!! SO BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL!!!!"
"I'M OK AS LONG AS YOU ARE HERE WITH ME!!! SEXUALITY IS ALL WE EVER NEED!!!!!" guitar guitar guitar

One can't agrue against it's mass appeal, since it went all the way up to #1 on the charts.
I've cumm to notice that songs without mass appeal tend to almost never chart that high.

But is it perfect?
I dunno.
Opinions on all things artistic are just about as relative as it gets, especially when one tries to look at it on a general/mass appeal level. I'm not sure what perfection really is,
but I am in a generous attitude right now so I say
sure. Why the fuck not.

However,
if you're one of those not in agreement with this,
well then,

I can't help you.

I think musically lyricall and how its produced it perfect theres so many different versions slightly and just as good as each other.. the video clip one is probley the best then the album and single equaly just as good like i think inthe albumb one u hear more on a guitar sound.. princes voice is amazing in it..

It's a very special song indeed.

Quite original too if you really think about it, even despite the overtly repeated melodic motif. I think it's actually Michael Bland's drumming and the chime-like synth tinklings on the chorus that make the song. The bridge part was considered very weird during the time of its release.

Speaking of which, this song seriously stood out from the rest of the major hits of 1994.

No, I don't think it was. It must have worked anyway as he's my husband now.

Just for you I will dig it out and play it again.
