Prince was 29 yrs old during SOTT, any young artist with that kind of talent today ? Prince was just appx 29 years of age when SOTT was released.
Who, out of today's artists, can compare to his talent at such a young age ? Maybe Norah Jones or A Keys ? or is there someone else we can think of having that great a command over music and instruments with such a large collage of work.....

Avril Levigne is pretty close in both talent and age. A tour de force of musical ability.

I have to agree with u here. I can't even imagine a 26 year old that would be able to do anything that rivaled Purple Rain let alone a young artist that could compare to Prince during the SOTT era.

There is this young cat in Atlanta though. This dude is going places 4 sure. His name is Kameron Corvet. The kid is damn good.

I'm all for the new generation carrying on the torch. I believe there are many talented artists out there that need to be heard. Prince in his early years has set the bar pretty high though.

Hell to tha naw. . . the main reason I say that is because I can't think of ANY relatively well known artist out today that writes, produces, sings, and plays every instrument on almost every song on their album that transcends musical styles and genres the way Prince does. So it will never be an apples to apples comparison.
And to be fair, SOTT was a seminal, tour de force that will stand the test of time so that may not be a fair comparison for another artist. But I can't even think of a contemporary artist that is producing groundbreaking music that's even comparable to Controversy, 1999, or Purple Rain. It's kinda sad really. And again, for me, the key is the total control and responsibility for everything on an album that Prince had. You don't see that kind of creative autonomy anymore, underground artists excluded.

I am sure there is outstanding, off the chart musical talent in the world right now. I know (judging from his speech at the NAACP) that he agrees. But, truthfully, in my heart, I don't know if anyone has been given the depth of talent he has been given. It is his curse and his gift. Can he be surpassed? No and HELL NO.

None of today's artists have Prince's kind of talent. Hell, they don't even have as much talent as Weird Al Yankovic. Andy is a four letter word.

I would have to say NO.
The real question is would any record company allow a musician to have as much creative freedom of expression as Prince was allowed to have from 1978-96? Can the industry cultivate and nuture that kind of talent? I am sure their have been and will continue to be artists of Prince's caliber out there. Will they be given a fair record deal? Will they be allowed to produce, arrange, compose, and perform their music, etc. I am not sure. There are probably plenty of 29 year olds that have that talent, innate and/or learned. Does the industry want that kind of talent? I am not sure. It seems that its more manufactured by a team of producers than one artist leading with their talent. The talented people are there, it just may be more difficult to find them, or if they have music out there to find it. Many may have to go independent to get their voice heard. Maybe I will learn of some new talent from this question. Chris

Shit, even a lot of old skool cats can't hold a candle to P, let alone these new jacks.
Wanna talk about SOTT, to compare someone means they would have to able to create something as twistedly genius as Housequake, and who can you think of that could? Only person I can think of is Trent Reznor, and he's hardly from the current generation... its been twenty years since he first hit the scene with Pretty Hate Machine. |
