There are several unofficial recordings of the song circulating, namely some outtake / rehearsals and then the live performance at First Avenue, MPLS on 3 August 1983. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

The 1st Ave performance Live is amazing!!!
The note he hits in the middle is just amazing! Damn in the middle of concert to belt out a note like that, to not worry about blowing out your voice. To try and easily hold a note like that. wow

Could he have squeezed it onto the pr album, I don't think so. The pr album is perfect the way it is.

A rock ballad thingy. I like it but it doesn't get anywhere near "the beautiful ones" which on the first hearing is disturbingly good
Similarities are there. PR is a tight album, and it doesn't fit in with ATWIAD, which in it's own way IMO is perfect the way it is

I just heard it, it's pretty damn good "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

The version you are listening to is probably from the Rehearsal for the August 3rd 1983 show.
A clever fellow removed Prince's instructions to the band to make it sound more like a Studio version. There are a couple of rehearsal versions of the songs avaliable but no Studio version. I always think the best version is from the show it's self, more passion in the vocals and better phrasing.

My favorite part of that song is when he says, "Yes I will" in that funny voice.

It's a really sweet song, nothing overtly sexual, more romantic and softer.

Before The Beautiful Ones, he probably planned that version for Purple Rain. (He used the August 3 recordings as a basis for several other tracks on that album). We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

More the other way round, it was squeezed OFF PR, in favour of The Beautiful Ones.

I read somewhere that The Beautiful Ones took the place of EI on the Purple Rain album. I like them both but I can see why TBO replaced EI. Prime aka The Kid
