I am married to a man that barely tolerates Prince. Although our first dance as husband and wife at our wedding was "Adore" because he really does like that song (and I insisted that our reception be filled with Prince tunes!) When we made our trek to Vegas in December my husband didn't go to 3121 with us (my cousin, my best friend, my sister, and I all went)

He doesn't bad mouth, because he knows that I've been into Prince since my mom took me to my first concert (Purple Rain Tour 1984-85) when I was 12. Hubby must know on some level that Prince is the best (he just doesn't want to admit that once again I am right!

You do deserve a medal for living with them if they openly hate him!

Its not even dislike its all out hate of Prince and anything Prince related.

Keep repeating "Musical Genius" "Musical Genius". My husband sarcastically says that "Prince is a musical genius, you know" only because I think it is TRUE! At least he says it...maybe others won't know he's being sarcastic.

I don't care if other people don't like Prince. They have a right to their opinion.

Heh, I brought up my whole thing about my serach for the "best" Prince CD's cuz I don't own any to a couple of my friends and someone else that I didn't know at nwing and the other guy said I don't own any Prince CD's cuz I don't like Prince. I told him, "Screw you."

That's what I'd say. He then went on about Michael Jackson and I was going nuts because I wanted to bring Prince up and say 'how dare you compare Michael to Prince, Michael's nothing now.'

Then I said 'Prince has class, Michael Jackson doesn't'

My family hated Prince too.

So when I was 13,
I ran away from home & moved top L.A..
I ended up becoming a first a hooker,
then a biker bar stripper,
though, technically, according to my tax records I'm an "entertainer".
Anyways,
it's not exactly what one called a glamorous career,
but it does support my life-style.

Which is basically,
just going from one coke fix to another with an occasional stop to pick up a piece of Prince merchandise.

So I guess what you could say I really am,
is a freespirit.

I would hand them a list of songs that were performed by prince and the ones th at he has made for others then say to them, Now you tell me how many artist can you say has a list like that? and as there checking it out they may start lightening up on the badass musician performer producer artist Singer Songwritter healthy vegitarian that I WANNA BE WITH!!!!!

As an open prince fan i get made fun of on a daily basis.
Everytime I open my mouth about prince i get stares or comments. And when starting a conversation with someone new when they find out I like prince usually most people have something rude to say about him like "Isn't he gay?" or "HE WEARS BUTTLESS CHAPS?" or "SICK!"
Those are the main three, usually i get comments about how gay he is.
OF COURSE THIS BOTHERS ME, I'm very young and have liked prince since I was even younger so they think I'm just a kid and don't know anything.
But, I am a very intelligent 15 year old and I just choose not to listen. At times it gets so hard to just ignore these people whom I find as Ignorant individuals with no respect towards peoples opinions or tastes.
It is especially hard at school when all the guys in my classes make fun when I wear my prince t-shirts or talk about Prince. But when they start to make fun I listen and shake my head and laugh at them. I literally just LAUGH! I mean if they sit there and have nothing to do but to take the time out to make fun of someone else that really isnt saying much about them. So i laugh, and they don't make fun for long because they see that I don't let it get to me and then it's not much fun for them anymore.
As for your parents not appreciating it, well you're going to have to deal. I mean I can't sit here and say i completely know what you're talking about because my mother is also a prince fan. And she is one of the reasons I'm so fond of Prince because She's one of the people who introduced him. My dad on the other hand can tolerate him, but does sometimes poke fun at me for it.

What to say to your family? I say when they starting talking bad about it just say "Do you think you could save your hating for someone who cares or atleast someone with similar opinions?"
