Considering he played 3 songs from Purple Rain, I'd have to say no. My Legacy

No I don't think it did surpass it in any way shape or form. Not if "defining moment" relates to mass popularity and the relevence to the moment in time. The Purple Rain era was Prince in his time, when he was THE act of the day, not just on a free show that people could watch and enjoy and talk about for a few days.
People went out and paid to watch PR, to buy the album, the number 1 singles, the tour, the lot. Back in that time he was where music/ culture was at. Singing three PR songs 23 years later on a football field during the half time oranges doesn't really cut it for me as far as defining moments in his career goes. I think the performance was good, but I really can't ever see the buzz of the Purple Rain era being topped and nor should we expect it to be from a 48 yr old guy. If you're very, very lucky, as an artist you get one "Purple Rain" era in ur career where ur the man the world over. He's still the man for us of course, but for the masses he's a great live act who used to make hits in the 80's. " A mind changed against its will, is of the same opinion still"

Do you really thing think the rest of the world is that interested in a bunch of pansy men so scared to play rugby they feel the need to wear armour??? I'm not sure if it was a defining moment for Prince, but with so many millions of folks watching the show, if only a third of those who watched liked it, it bodes well for him.
Id' say at least 50% of the people who saw it liked it. Personally, I loved it. I felt an energy in his performance that I hadn't felt in a long long time. I just hope he doesn't fuck it up with some weird piece of news now. And he should release an album soon.

It definately got him seen by a lot more people that would have seen "Purple Rain". "Purple Rain" was seen only by people that wanted to see it. Prince was seen at the Super Bowl by folks that wanted to see him but also people that didn't want to see him which is apparent by the letters they have been sending in complaining about him "turning the Super Bowl gay". Since they are tired of homosexuality being shoved down their throats, Prince needs to come back next year and shove it up their asses. Maybe they would like that better. The only undisputable way to tell popularity is sales; and if people didn't feel inspired to go out and get a Prince album, then exactly how has it helped him? Sure, some of his sales went up slightly, but it's not as if millions went out and bought a Prince album. They'll probably but a ticket for a tour, but then Prince wasn't having problems selling tickets to begin with.

Prince can always play stadiums, it's up to him. The average music fan mostly associates him with Purple Rain, the movie and music. THAT is, was, and always will be his defining moment, and his albatross. That's like saying that WE ARE THE WORLD defines MJ. I agree. The super bowl was a clever move--but nothing on the scale of the forever classic, rich PURPLE RAIN!!! I mean, no comparison.

Accujack said: The Super Bowl performance in no way comes close to Purple Rain as Prince's defining moment, but the SB performance is arguably the most important performance of his career, simply because it was the largest audience he has ever performed in front of.
I would guess that most of the viewing audience of the SB had never seen a live Prince performance before, and judging from what I've heard and read a great majority of them thought it was fantastic. Errr, wasn't the Syracuse concert from the Purple Rain tour broadcast globally? I'm sure that would count as his biggest ever audience? Bart? I haven't seen the SB performance, much to my dismay - would love to as it sounds great. Its certainly a boost to him currently, but it doesn't even come close to the magnitude of impact that PR caused. He's unlikely to surpass that, despite the fact he still has a lot left in the tank, IMO. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

Bart? Nooooo..... Are you saying it wasn't broadcast? Wasn't his biggest audience? Or that you wish it hadn't been? So hard to tell I'm pretty certain it was part of a global broadcast, but my Princeology is not what it once was ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...
