Super Bowl- a month later-Did the Super Bowl appearance finally surpass "Purple Rain" as Prince's defining moment? There is still so much good being written about the Super Bowl perfomance. Everyone seems surprised and astounded that Prince was so good. I think the performance may have finally replaced Purple Rain as his new defining moment and made him cool and accepted by the mainstream again. He may be able to play stadiums next time out if he puts out a good single to back it up. ______________________________________________

Well I became a fan during the Purple Rain era. I know what it felt like so I have to disagree. For the superbowl it just enhanced the love and respect I have for Prince as a musician.

If Prince were a Muhammad Ali:
"Purple Rain" was his stunning defeat of Sonny Liston The Superbowl was his "Rumble in the Jungle" or his "Thrilla in Manilla". "New Power slide...."

Let's not forget that Purple Rain (the film) was a huge box office success internationally and scored an academy award, with the album spawning several international hits, and sitting at the top of the US album charts for nearly six months and the North American tour comprising almost 100 concerts. It was a career defining era rather than moment. It placed Prince on the world stage as a musician and performer. By comparison, the Superbowl performance certainly reached a huge audience, but largely of American football supporters (and their families) for about 15 minutes, who witnessed him performing several cover versions sandwiched between music from Purple Rain. It was certainly a spectacle and memorable performance, and only time will tell how much benefit Prince will reap from the exposure. In the past, he hasn't always seized the moment. However, a month later, whilst the north american impact of the superbowl performance might still linger, few people are talking about it internationally. It would have taken a wardrobe malfunction to achieve that. . [Edited 3/4/07 9:06am] ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

I'd think that yeah, it would surpass all of his other accomplishments, although his performance at the Brits last year was just plain incredible.
However, I can't really say for sure if it surpassed "Purple Rain" as his defining moment becuase I haven't seen the whole movie. It's kinda hard to really compare the two if I don't know much about the one. Although "Purple Rain" did define Prince for me as an incredibly talented musician. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

Prince can always play stadiums, it's up to him. The average music fan mostly associates him with Purple Rain, the movie and music. THAT is, was, and always will be his defining moment, and his albatross. That's like saying that WE ARE THE WORLD defines MJ. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I think the performance was great, but not as good as the Arsenio Hall Show first appearance, I think he tore it up that night!

I'd have to give a big hearty "No." I think the SB reminded many that Prince still has loads of talent and can shut up the naysayers & can still grab new fans whenever he feels like it but I think the reason PR was such a hit was because of his total ability to wow us with his music, songwriting, his band, style and the fact that he came out of his media silence to promote & star in a film that made him the big hit that he is... and probably because so many of his diehard fans were like "what? he's making a movie???" I know for one after the movie when friends & family who never liked him jumped aboard I was like I TOLD YOU he was DA MAN! [Edited 3/4/07 14:31pm]

The Super Bowl performance in no way comes close to Purple Rain as Prince's defining moment, but the SB performance is arguably the most important performance of his career, simply because it was the largest audience he has ever performed in front of.
I would guess that most of the viewing audience of the SB had never seen a live Prince performance before, and judging from what I've heard and read a great majority of them thought it was fantastic. He is exactly who we thought he was

The Super Bowl halftime was just OK. Nothing special at all. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Only we care about it enough to still be talking about it. That's just the way it is and I, for one, like it that way. "What a lovely fat beat with a zompige baslijn"

ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT and Lovesexy (honourable mention to The Black Album), all surpassed Purple Rain - musically... as did 1999 and Dirty Mind, and possibly Controversy.
When considering his career, however, I truly believe SOTT is his defining moment.... Even though I'm loathed to say it, as I see Lovesexy as his defining moment, but I'm sure the music industry will always come back to SOTT as definite Prince.

In a word, no. Purple Rain was an international phenomenon - and the songs from that album what the casual fans always expect him to play, hence their appearance in the Superbowl set.
For me, I struggle to get past all the mistakes and glitches in the Superbowl performance, particularly his guitar cutting out for the final few important notes of Purple Rain. It was a great occasion, but not the slickest of his performances by far. As I predicted, rather than seizing the moment and following up the Superbowl success with a new album and tour, Prince has let things quiet down completely. That's just Prince, he's never hurried by events, he does things when HE feels like it.
