Actually, Prince's vocal range isn't that remarkable. There are plenty of "trained" singers who would have the same range or more - including the falsetto.
What makes Prince unique is that: 1. His voice has a distinctive and personal sound in all registers. He doesn't sound like any other singer, and especially not like the typical R&B male - which makes for a fresh approach to his particular kind of music. 2. He actually uses all of his range extensively - whereas other singers tend to avoid uncomfortable registers. (You never hear Stevie or MJ sing low for instance, although they can. Or Larry Graham in a high register, etc) Also, Prince is very flexible with his voice, and uses it very much like an instrument - the way a jazz singer would do.

Maybe flexible is the better term. Ask where they're going, they'll tell U – "Nowhere"

It got better with time and became nearly as good as the classic falsetto soul men, marvin, kendricks etc.., but never equal. his falsetto had the sound of a white falsetto, the one distinctive thing about black falsetto, going all the way back to africa is the fullness of it. as a singer myself, i have tried to imitate it but i end up sounding whiter than p on his worst day. And for the record, in classical music, falsetto notes do not count as part of a range traditionally speaking, his normal voice is actually pretty limited, and he can go pretty deep with it, but the upper ranges leave him screaming and breaking up. Still, overall a truly great singer.
I don't think he was a mediocre singer in the beginning, but his head voice is average not mediocre. I agree that Prince sounds "white", He doesn't sounds like a "black " male. Please! [Edited 3/10/07 2:06am]

erotic city is pitch-shifted... don't know if anyone mentioned that. there's no normally pitched prince on that track.

I'll never forget the first time I heard Prince's speaking voice. It was on some awards show in the early 90s. I was expecting him to sound like MJ, because Prince sings in falsetto a lot, but when he started talking I was like. Brotha has bass. That just made him even more sexy to me. I love deep voices Prince Rogers Nelson

I've always loved his voice in I HATE U.
Where he starts 'this court is now in session' all the way to the guitar solo is simply magnificent. I just can't believe all the things people say !

Even though "Solo" is a GREAT example of P's vocal abilities, I think the uniqueness of character in Prince's voice makes it great! Sure, he has terrific range, but for my money, nobody around today can emit the kind of emotion that Prince does when he sings. That in and of itself makes him stand amongst the GREATS vocally...
I thought the same about Hendrix. His voice isn't great persay, but you "feel" Jimi when he sings...know what I'm sayin'? Just my 2 cents.

adorable2 said: He has definitely became a better singer over the years. But for me its not all about the timbre and tone of his voice, but the way he uses it that blows me away. Like he's a musician's musician, he's also a singer's singer.
I love how u worded this adorable

People are confusing his head voice with his falsetto

As strange as it is, when he does his characteristic screech, (I'll give an example from a song if I can think of one), it makes me laugh so much. I find it hilarious, getting me thinking "that's Prince for ya." had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone
