Prince's voice.

Me and my friends was just listening to some of his songs, it started out with, Kiss, went into Erotic City, Call my name, Adore, I Love U in Me, and How Come U dont call me anymore. Soo My friends dont beileve Prince is singing all those songs especially Erotic City, because his voice went so deeep. I tried to convince thats how talented he is, I think it's just awesome how his voice can go to super high to super love. hmm anyone else agree ?

He has a very large vocal range, which is one of the reasons why I like him so much. (I studied voice in college, so I really appreciate a good voice) To be honest, I must prefer his deep baritone voice to his tenor voice. His lower range is much richer, and less nasal. His falsetto is amazing tho! I've heard a lot of men sing in falsetto (or try anyway lol ) and Prince is definitely one of the best. He's got quite the instrument, and he knows how to use it. I do wish he'd incorporate his low voice more often...

Agreed, its often the case that prince will speak-rap songs in a lower register... it's a terrible waste. i mean, listen to his voice on 'sometimes it snows in april'. it's simply beautiful.

His falsetto is what makes his voice special, probably the best I've ever heard after Philip Bayley. Amazing and very impressive.

But his "chest register" for a rnb artist is average to me. Just don't like it. neutral

a mediocre singer in the beginning who became truly great through hard work. Even his falsetto was sort of barry gibbish or whoever that white guy int the bee gees was. It got better with time and became nearly as good as the classic falsetto soul men, marvin, kendricks etc.., but never equal. his falsetto had the sound of a white falsetto, the one distinctive thing about black falsetto, going all the way back to africa is the fullness of it. as a singer myself, i have tried to imitate it but i end up sounding whiter than p on his worst day. And for the record, in classical music, falsetto notes do not count as part of a range traditionally speaking, his normal voice is actually pretty limited, and he can go pretty deep with it, but the upper ranges leave him screaming and breaking up. Still, overall a truly great singer.

and much of it is all about personal taste, subjective, some people don't like his voice at all, some like the normal voice and hate the falsetto. He gives us plenty to like/dislike in everything he does.

I love how he plays with his voice. U're gonna C me is his falsetto at its best. The One is an awesome tenor/falsetto mix. Little Red Corvette shows off his tenor...He throws it at you in so many different ways I guess its hard to believe its from one person...I don't think he has a limit even his screams are divine...

He has definitely became a better singer over the years. But for me its not all about the timbre and tone of his voice, but the way he uses it that blows me away. Like he's a musician's musician, he's also a singer's singer.
I'm an org elitist... totally unapproachable.

Yeah, i cover little red corvette, I think of it as a amalgram of rock and roll up to that point in history. It always gets a great reaction and has almost gotten me jobs. something about the song. He does a little elvis in his lower ends there, which I, as an Elvis nut, take even further. The man became a great singer, starting from near zero. He didn't even like his voice when he started out.

Yeah, his voice can do so much and is as versatile as the songs that he writes. Sure, I'm not so crazy about it when he sings "Kiss"... for obvious reason, but that's okay because his lyrics make up for it and I still love the song for the lyrics.
I like a singer with song and voice versatility... but there are still plenty of more reasons why I like Prince as much as I do.

I'm in basic agreement except to say that while his lower chest register is average, I do like it. It's Prince doing Prince's music/songs...delivering them as only he can. He's a whole package. The songs, the words, music, arrangements, the image, the on-stage presence, the vocals: high and low.

That's the reason why I like Prince, if it wasn't for his versatility, his instrument abilities, music or live performances I wouldn't appreciate him.

But I still do not like his chest vocals, they are limited and lack soul to me.

I think he does sing all of his songs, but I don´t like his "high voice" that much. I prefer him singing in a deep voice.

He's definitely not a Nat King Cole, Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Ruben Studdard, and there are others, of course, when it comes to "chest vocals". I know I'll probably get slammed and brick for sayin' it, but I even like George Benson's vocals. It's just my personal preferences for the sounds I like to hear from male vocalists singing in their natural, lower chest register range.

I don't think he was a mediocre singer in the beginning, but his head voice is average not mediocre.

I agree that Prince sounds "white", He doesn't sounds like a "black " male.
