No more prince for me

Well I've just listend to the new track 'guitar', and I got to say for me, thats it. I've been a fan for a long time, and I'll always love some of the older favourites, but I just can't digest the new stuff prince is putting out. I find it really unmusical, very unoriginal and just generally a bit crap. (a total contrast to what I used to think about the music he wrote.)

If he's ever in town again I might go and see him for the live shows, but even the last few live performaces for me have been a bit uninspired, certainly nothing in he league of the lovesexy tours. What a shame.

That's not 'no more Prince' for you then, is it?

Also, say what you will about his music but his live performing is still world-class.

Could you explain what you consider so bad about Guitar? In My Humble, if you were to pick Prince's lowest ebb, it would have been NPS - songs like Push It Up and I Like Funky Music make me what to evacuate my bowels using a hose and some instant coffee (one for all you Green Wing-ers out there).

That was the true nadir (spelling) of Prince's career - Guitar is jaunty and enjoyable (at least) by comparison.

Yeah, because when you say no more Prince for me that excludes all live performances also, even if he was performing on your front lawn. You better close those blinds. lol

Hang on, hang on. Give the orger his/her say. If they feel that upset about the output of one of their musical favourites they have the right to express that. Instead of waving and criticising and chuckling, ask questions and attempt to get a reasoned response.

Be a bit grown up.

Song of the heart and Guitar are not my fav Prince songs and I would
be dissapointed if those 2 were single releases, with video and all,4 an upcoming album...but there just a soundtrack song and an internet release.
I guess if we look at his whole career and album tracks, one could find
a song that's worse than Guitar!!

However,if U didn't like Musicology and 3121,and all his latest performances,
I can understand your dissapointment wink
At least U can still enjoy what the man did the first 20 years of his career,
I still do!

I think i should maybe clarify. For me there two sides to every musical act, the studio and live sides. Quite often bands and artists are usually much stronger at one or the other. I would say Prince was remarkable in his abilty to excel at both.

I say was, in that I think he is only decent at performing anymore, and even then you normally have to endure the latast rubbish tunes, and to my ears its not worth it. yes the musianship will never go away, but thats all very well when you have to listen to garbage like lolita. Whats the saying, 'you can't polish a turd.'

I think 'guitar' is a perfect example of prince recent output (and by recent i suppose I vaguely mean evreything post gold album.) The tune has nothing which I consider to be the hall marks of good music, prince or otherwise. I think a lot of so called fans are putting up with some very mediocre music, at least thats how I feel. Maybe if we stopped buying, he'd stop producing the drudge and re-think his ideas.

I guess prince's problem is his biggest influence is himself, and it looks like that has run it's course.

This type of thread always pops up every couple of months...along with the

There is no need to announce that you not into an artist anymore. neutral

"Lovesexy"? You've got to grow with the times, it is no longer 1988!

a) Sometimes there is the need to announce you're no longer into an artist. Possibly, the artist in question may see he lost a fan - so what? well, at least he'd know. Besides, what else are these forums for if not for opinions and attitudes?

b)"Grow with the times"? Explain. "It is no longer 1988!" You mean we shouldn't expect 'good' from Prince because he's past his best, or do you mean 'accept the output, it's what the artist considers good at the time'? Clarify your point - if only for my sake.

c) I would not at all be surprised if both Song of the Heart and Guitar appear on the next Prince album. For all his 'output' ratio - and bearing in mind all the songs he has in the vault - Prince is pretty poor at exploiting the interweb. If The Dance can end up on 3121, Guitar can end up on a future album release.

d) It would interesting to hear what you, Bewdy, consider to the last 'good' Prince tune. I've been a fan for a long time, but there are songs on all the albums he's released - including NPS - that are worthwhile listens/better than most of the garbage out there. Lolita is one of these songs - chirpy, happy pop-song - as are many of the other songs - I'm not going to list. What do you consider to be Prince's last good song?

Sorry - just occurred to me: it's not 'an artist' it's 'The Artist' and, because of the nature of the forum and the feelings this man inspires, there is always reason to announce you are not into him any longer.

Its only because what you are hearing is not new anymore. When P first burst onto the scene every1 was like "WOW". Remember he's been around for a long time and when you put out new music its hard not to sound like yourself. Prince has got has got his own sound and it will never change. I admit some of his recent tunes have been a little under the weather but still some very good stuff. I think 3121 and Musicology are getting back to "Old school Prince".

But as BoySimon says every1 is entitled to their own opinion and we should respect that. Its a shame that you do feel this way but remember Prince will always have a place in your heart.

I think this is point for me, i used to be able to buy a prince album and pretty much every track on there was a winner, sometimes there was the odd dog, like 'positivty' on lovesexy, but on the whole I could hit play at the beginning and leave the Cd running. Now it's a case of skip, skip, skip, skip, eject. insert, Ah... stevie wonder, innervisions....

I can't recall a recent track of prince's which I think has inspired me the way say 'joy in repitition' did / does.

And why am i announcing it, well hell why does anybody say anything, becuase I can.

I actually like those two albums better than anything he's done since The Truth.
While far from ground breaking, I at least hear some decent songs again.
And let's be fair, the majority of artists produce their most impressive and inspiring work within the first 10-15 years of their career.
Look at Zappa, Bowie and Stevie Wonder as examples. Most artists hit that wall eventually. Obviously Prince was no exception.
