I'm 20, have two prince tattoos and am officially the number one fan in montana. I used to have a purple satin bed with embroidered symbols, a 3ftx3ft wooden gold symbol, prince posters everywhere and I wrote every paper possible about him. PS. I love your little picture...my room is full of hughart basquiat inspired pictures

this is wonderful. I was 14 when Purple Rain came out and it's great to say after all these years Prince's music continues to interest people across all generations.

Thanx, that's the exact article I remember reading before. I don't think it was that Simon "hates" Prince, he just thought the way he came and went was just rude... but as Prince fans, we let him get away with it cuz it's part of his style. No, he called him "selfish"... but I think that he had other things in mind that night. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure if Prince was really a big fan of the show, so that's why he insisted on going it alone (well, except for "the twins"), plus compared to him, the finalists look unprofessional... okay a lot of people look unprofessional compared to Prince, but that's hardly the point.

Prince has his reasons and I respect that. I just find it funny how Simon took it. Now that Housequake is back up, if I'm really in the mood for it, I'll have the clip there to watch again for the first time since last May.

Simon is a pussy biggrin

And U're welcome... oh and yes, I think Prince hates the show biggrin

Not stupid at all. I haven't fully discussed it with my college friends either, so I'm still kind of a "closet fan"... come to think of it, I haven't really said anything to my parents about all of the web surfing I've been doing on Prince these past three weeks... they'd think I was either nuts or distracting myself from what I should be doing (writing papers, etc.). I can't really come out and say anything yet cuz the next time I come home, it'll be for Spring Break and I have an assignment to do over the week (which sux, I know).

I think my dad would think its cool that I'm into the Prince, but there is a fine line between being a fan and just plain overdoing it... to this point, I really dont think I have... except for staying up to 3am to see him on SNL repeat, that was a mistake cuz i had to get up at 8 for classes.

I was 13 when I became a Prince fan, and all of my classmates thought I was WEIRD! I officially went from being kind-of-nerdy, to a total outcast. That didn't stop me from drawing prince on everything I owned, and listening to his music 24/7. 11 years later, those clowns are out of my life and Prince is still here.

So to all the young fans who are ridiculed by their peers, keep your chin up and don't be ashamed. Chances are that your friends' favorite artists will be forgotten by next year, but our Prince is a LEGEND. cool

OMG I have a crazy story about drawing prince on everything.
Over here in my school, we have 2 deliver every single paper with a header (Name, Date, # o' work and # o' student) and I always draw the symbol on top.
Anyways, I once 4got 2 put my name on it but it had the symbol... and the teacher was like... "U 4got 2 put Ur name but I knew it was Urs because of the prince " lol
That was hot biggrin

That's funny. biggrin

Oh, I have to add that I played a part in my social exile by being one of those annoying people who got angry when people called him Prince. It was 1995, and I ate up every bit of the name change thing. Whenever I heard someone say, "Oh, don't you like Prince..." I wouldn't even let them finish their sentence! I'd bust into a screaming fit, "His name is not Prince anymore! His name is an unpronounceable symbol! He is The Artist! GET IT RIGHT!!!"
Damn, I must have been annoying! lol

There was no org at that time (at least I don't think there was in '95), so I was completely ALONE in my Prince obsession. You guys should be grateful that you at least have people online to talk to about Prince. Lucky kids...

Yeah, this thread is awesome. I feel like I have more in common with people.

I went on housequake (thank god it's back up) and I saw a bunch of Prince interviews yesterday, but my hand's down favorite was on Ellen. He looked great, did three great songs and he seemed so relaxed and I really got to see him for who he was as a person. I learned a lot about "personal Prince" as Matt Lauer put him on the Today's Show interview and I really like what I see. Imagine knowing him in person... that's gotta be huge.

Anyway, I was thinking how I got into him pretty late, so I was exposed to more of his more recent music than his earlier stuff. His stuff from the 80's blew me away the first time I saw them, but after seeing his performances on those interview shows, I don't know. Do I like him better now or before?

I want to say that I like him better now because he's a bit more laid back and mature, etc... but his older stuff was a bit more fun. Let's start a consenus here.

Do we prefer 80's Prince's or today's Prince?

Absolutely.
I'll admit it, I really like mainstream music today isn't as good as it used to be. The 80's had awesome music, and the 90's did too, but ever since the end of the boyband era, I can't get into anything mainstream anymore. I feel that it lacks substance. The hot acts of today include the Pussycat Dolls, Justin Timberlake, The Killers, to name a few and I can't get into any of them. Music of the new millennium just isn't appealing to me, so I rarely listen to the radio anymore. If anything, I listen to a few one-hits of a different groups, but don't like any of their other music.

Prince seems to be capable of defying time and everything that turns me off of what other people my age listen to. He controls everything in his music, the melody, lyrics, instruments and he has a good arensal of music with a lot of variety... and the guy is a born performer.

His music is not only music, but it's poetry for the soul, a work of art. I can't say that about many others.
