ATWIAD NOT PURPLE RAIN part deux? BULLSHIT! i still sense a pattern in most of the songs on ATWIAD to PURPLE RAIN. prince said he wasnt trying to make a PR2 but AMERICA alone totally bags on BABY IM A STAR.
i love the album tho, but i think it is just purple rain 2 with some eastern instruments thrown in...  | |

I agree. It really isn't as far removed from Purple Rain as people claim it to be. It certainly has that live warehouse sound, the linn drum, and the whole duality / sex vs. love thing going on. "The Ladder" is very much inspired by "Purple Rain". "Raspberry Beret" is very similar to "Take Me With U" (to the point where he's often played them as a medley on recent tours), and as you've said, "America" basically evolved from the live version of "Baby I'm A Star".
Prince's albums are always derivitive of the pervious one, but always looking ahead at the same time. 1999 influenced the sound of Purple Rain, which influenced the sound of ATWIAD, which influenced the sound of Parade etc. Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com
