After letting it stay in its wrapper for 2 years (I was hatin' on his whole marriage thing you know) I finally opened it and was pleased with it. Disc 2 is my overall favorite (go figure) but "The Love We Make" and "Joint 2 Joint" are my favorite songs.

Fans 35 to 50 yrs old say that even though we're still die hard Prince fans till we die, Prince hasn't put out anything significant since SOTT....can we relate...and debate....

I can relate but I can't debate...I'm a years shy of 35 but recently started listening to Springsteen for what's been missing in Prince's music for too long - substance. I don't think anyone can wow us like prince...recent performances prove that (rock hall of fame, Fury on SNL) but if I have to sit through another song that mentinos a club or rims....

While Springsteen and Bono are writing about things that matter in the world, Prince still write about 'the rim upon my ride' or whatever he's saying in yet another throwaway 'incense and candles'. FOr many years, I've looked hard to find some4thing interesting in everything he does. Even in the crappy 'incense/candles' there are some moments that are worth repeat listenings but that's cause it's Prince creating it...he's a phenomenal talent. However, to waste his talents or such junk...it's a shame. Anyhow...I'm not hear to convince anyone...that is where I am as a fan. YOu gain perspective as you grow older. I can say now that Prince is not the song writer that Springsteen is. Not at all. Can he great songs on part with SPringsteen and the best - YES. Does he, NO. We all know Prince can do anything he wants. However, he can be judged on what he does and not what he can or may do one day.

Prince has never written anything as consistently personal as Bruce's Tunnel of Love. I'm only begun getting into the guy so there is much more I'm sure.

I should have added that I have really loved a lot of stuff he's done in recent years. Parts of NEWS was thrilling. The One Night Alone album was nice...I enjoyed 'the truth' and 'rainbow' minus the lyrics, was some of his best work. My point was not that he 'can't' do it anymore...it was that he does not do it. Releases like 3121 are just sh***Y

There are songs I love on just about every album. "Fury", "Guitar", "Beautiful, Loved and Blessed", "Musicology" and "If Eye was the Man in Ur Life" jump immediately to mind as recent classic releases.

39 yrs. old(40 in June - Geminis Rule!) I still get excited with
new release, new appearances, new tours. I've kept up with Prince and
his journey as an artist since 1983. I haven't liked everything - who has?
Still, going to a Prince show is still an amazing experience.
And, if someone brings up 'relevance' again - well, look for it
in your own life.

I believe that Prince hasn't produced his masterpiece yet. nana
I just hope that I'm around to experience it!

Can't relate...I feel like Prince produces music that we hear with our minds just as much as our ears. I listen to his music with high expectation and he delivers quality if not substance in every song. It makes me a little jaded when I listen to the radio because I don't hear the quality or the substance except maybe India, Robin, and Jill. I hope it turns around soon. Where are the musicians hiding?????

my thoughts on this topic....

for ME, there will never be a time like 80's Prince, but that is more about me than him. I was cleaning the basement this weekend with my wife and we pulled out the vinyl and played "Parade", "Purple Rain" and some extended and b-side stuff. that is the music that just makes me smile because it brings back so many great memories of when your 16 and all that matters is music.. so on one hand, for me SOTT and back are the best..

on the other hand, I love "Gold", "Batman", and "3121" are some of my favorites, I just don't have the same "warm feelings" when I listen to them.

I mean this is Prince.. everything he makes is interesting and worth adding to your music collection..it just doesn't all give me the warm fuzzys

Prince kinda lost me from RAVE until now. Don't get me wrong. I love a lot of the songs from albums after. But I'm spoiled since I've been a fan since 1979. My favorite after RAVE.....THE CHOCOLATE INVASION and SLAUGHTERHOUSE.

Damn this post is still on huh?.... Well I must be fair and say that I have not bought a Prince album since D&P..I just got tired of being disappointed. But I have heard the stuff that gets airplay and it makes me glad that I didnt but the cd. It wasnt really who I was at the time or where I was in my life that made the older music sound better, good music is good music no matter where or when you are. Prince completely deserted his roots, left his niche for experimentation, as is his and everyone else's right to do so, but he left most of us old heads hangin'.....

At 36 and being a fan since IWBYL in 1979(I was 8 going on 9) Prince albums have each gotten better year after year. In the mid 90's he seemed to stall in my book a little because everything sounded the same. TGE (don't hate me) was okay but the Come Album was far superior. TRC to me was different but it didn't break new ground in my opinion. When Musicology came out, I was like this is moving in the right direction and 3121 is going to be a Prince classic as it's a strong album from begining to end and a return to form of improving from one album to the next. Prince 1979 to 1992 was a runaway train of Popfunkadelicsoul that can't be touched. Prince 1995 to 2001 was an artist going through the motions with nothing to prove. Prince 2004 to present is Y'all knew I was always funky, but the system held me back, but I'm free so try to stop me now! Game blouses, bitch!

every one of his cd's (new and old) there is some songs that makes me go nutz! and there is always some (not many) that I don't love.
He just dosen't do all the sexual stuff he used to do. Maybe that what everyone misses in his new music! razz
Stop worryin' bout' what people say,
Ain't gonna stop em' anyway! Prince

Everything changed with The Rainbow Children.
Even his old stuff like The Cross or Lovesexy doesn't sound the same since.
It's difficult to enjoy songs like "I Know" - knowing this happy man became a JW.
Musicology was an o.k. album, songs like "The Word" or "Get On The Boat" leave a bad taste - because I'm NOT flying on the wings of the new translation.

i agree with you to a point -- many lyrics to The Rainbow Children were a downer to me too (though i'm crazy about the music!) -- his mix of JW New World Translation interpretation, new/old age Akashic records beliefs, and some of the racial references; however, the fact that he's in the Bible and staying spiritual gives me hope, for he has known the truth as evident in his pre-JW songs, and if he keeps studying the Bible, even the New World Translation version, he will come back around because there's no avoiding the Truth -- Jesus as God is written all over the NWT as well -- for example, compare the statements made by Jehovah and those made by Jesus -- they are either the same person or one of them is a liar. one God, one Savior, one sacrifice, one Way, one salvation, one Truth. if there's a fire in a movie theatre, what's so wrong with telling people there's one way to the one exit door if that is truly the case? in Jesus alone (God in the flesh) is our salvation -- not through any church, sacraments, or any other version of God. the Truth will out. keep praying, my friend, for our friend.

35, and diggin the man since 17. Realizing how much I have changed since then throughout the years, this must also influence the way I experience his music from now and then, especially since it has changed (with me) so much. What you all think?

36 years old here, and you couldn't be further from the truth...

I thnk there are "classics" on each and every album/CD he releases. Signifigance, as you say, is in the eye of the beholder. Those trapped in the past are blind to the relevance of the present...

39 YOA and I perfectly agree with you. If you edit from the great wealth of material that P has released since 1987 you have an unbelievable collection of music. You just can't be lazy and expect your music to be presented in a clean, marketed package every three years like most "superstars". Hell, P has had years were he has released 9 cd's of music. We have been so fortunate.
